It seems like enthusiasts might need to hold off on getting excited about the EA Sports College Basketball game. Not long after EA Sports’ Vice President of Business Development, Sean O’Brien, stated they were ready for the task of developing the game, a fresh report indicates that development has encountered an issue.
According to Sports Business Journal (SBJ), schools are considering negotiating with competitor 2K Sports over a potential standalone product.
As a gamer speaking from personal experience, it appears one major concern revolves around Electronic Arts (EA) proposing an exclusivity contract for their College Basketball game. If approved, this would make EA’s College Basketball the sole “action simulation” game featuring Division 1 men’s and women’s basketball programs, effectively locking out competition from this space.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been keeping an ear to the ground about our favorite sports game, but
Prior to SBJ’s report release, TopMob had been developing a comparable story, and I can confirm that 2K has remained a significant candidate for acquiring college basketball rights. As previously mentioned, 2K Sports is confident that it could bring a standalone game to market more swiftly than EA, leveraging the engine already in place for the NBA 2K series.
As a gaming enthusiast myself, I’ve heard whispers from sources who prefer to stay anonymous suggesting that, should 2K strike a deal with educational institutions, we might just see a new game by the year 2027, if things go smoothly.
According to one report on Thursday, ‘EA’s announcement served as a catalyst, fueling an increased effort to achieve results as quickly as possible.’
2K’s initial plan, submitted to the College Licensing Company, suggested a non-exclusive license agreement allowing the inclusion of College Basketball within NBA 2K as Downloadable Content (DLC). The proposed DLC would initially feature only a few teams and gradually expand each year. If certain performance benchmarks are met, it could eventually lead to a full college basketball game in the future.
In simpler terms, this game might not feature every college from the Division 1 league. Instead, it will primarily concentrate on bigger universities, ones that have over a hundred both male and female sports teams. The aim is to offer them each a reasonable compensation for their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights.
2K’s interest in a college basketball game, along with EA’s, was first reported in December 2024.
As an enthusiast, I’ve reached out to both EA and 2K, eagerly waiting for their comments on the buzzing speculations about the forthcoming future of College Basketball video games. If any response comes my way, I’ll make sure to update this narrative accordingly.
