Eating a Devil Fruit in One Piece doesn’t affect every character the same way. Some people can easily adjust to their new powers, while others experience huge life changes. How much a fruit impacts someone really depends on the power itself – gaining the ability to create a few flames is different than gaining a power that alters their personality or how they see the world.
Devil Fruits are often incredibly powerful, and eating one can drastically change a person-either helping them reach their full potential or turning them into a destructive force. These fruits can completely alter someone’s life, and that’s certainly been true for many characters in *One Piece*, as you’ll see below.
SMILE Fruit
Killer Was Forced To Break Out Of His Shell After Being Force-Fed A SMILE Fruit
- User: Killer
- Type: Defective
I’ve always noticed Killer, Eustass Kid’s right-hand man, as a really quiet and mysterious figure. He always wears a mask, and for a long time, he barely spoke to anyone except Kid himself. It made him incredibly enigmatic. But everything changed when Orochi’s men captured him. To save his crew, he was forced to eat a strange, artificial Devil Fruit, and that completely broke down the silent front he’d maintained.
The fruit had a strange side effect: it made Killer laugh uncontrollably, often bringing him to tears from embarrassment. While he hadn’t chosen to eat it, this incident dramatically altered how others perceived him. He could no longer maintain his serious, brooding image because of the constant laughter, fundamentally changing both his self-perception and the way the world saw him.
Paw Paw Fruit
Kuma Becomes A Man Of The People Who Is Able To Save Lives With His Ability
- User: Kuma
- Type: Paramecia
Kuma has been a significant character in *One Piece* for a long time, but his complete backstory was only revealed recently on Egghead Island, and it was incredibly emotional. A key moment in his flashback takes place at God Valley when the Rocks pirates arrive, leading Kuma to discover a Devil Fruit. By eating the Paw Paw fruit, Kuma gained the ability to physically transfer pain away from others through touch. Later, this power allowed him to become a healer for the people of the Sorbet Kingdom.
The fruit’s power appealed to Kuma’s desire to help others, letting him alleviate their suffering, even if it meant taking that pain onto himself. It also allowed him to strategically separate the Straw Hat crew at Sabaody, pushing them to become stronger so they could ultimately save the world. This all happened before he lost control of his own will, solidifying his role as a genuine hero.
Human Human Fruit
Chopper Becomes A Doctor After Acquiring Human-Like Intelligence
- User: Chopper
- Type: Zoan
Luffy wouldn’t likely object to having a reindeer roam around the Sunny, but the rest of the crew might not be so happy about it. Luckily, Chopper ate the Human-Human Fruit, which made him incredibly smart and allowed him to become a skilled doctor who has helped the Straw Hats out of trouble many times.
Without the special fruit, Chopper probably would have remained on Drum Island with the other reindeer. This ability is what allowed him to join the crew and begin his incredible journey. While he sometimes wishes he were bigger or more human, he’s grateful to the fruit for helping him become so much more than just an ordinary animal.
String String Fruit
After A Troubled Childhood, Doflamingo Found The Power He Needed To Destroy The World
- User: Doflamingo
- Type: Paramecia
At first, Doflamingo appears to be a villain driven purely by madness and intense hatred for the world. However, there’s a tragic reason behind his monstrous behavior. Though born into the elite Celestial Dragon family, his father chose to live among ordinary people, hoping to build a connection with them. This decision backfired horribly when the villagers, fueled by resentment towards their status, turned on the family and nearly executed them.
The experience deeply traumatized Doflamingo, leading him to believe he couldn’t trust anyone. As a child, he lacked the power to retaliate against those who had betrayed him, until Trebol offered him the String-String Fruit. This powerful Devil Fruit allowed him to overcome any obstacle, ultimately leading to his position as a Warlord and the ruler of Dressrosa.
Dark Dark Fruit
Blackbeard’s Rise To Infamy All Started With The Dark Dark Fruit
- User: Blackbeard
- Type: Logia
Much of Blackbeard’s early life remains unknown, but it’s clear he wasn’t a strong fighter when he first joined Whitebeard’s crew. He could handle himself in minor fights, but his path to becoming a powerful pirate truly began when he discovered the Dark-Dark Fruit. This fruit was so desirable that it drove him to betray his crew and even defeat a fellow pirate, Ace, whom he then handed over to the Marines.
This fruit is the reason Blackbeard is such a high-priority target for the Marines. It allowed him to use his darkness ability to somehow eat a second Devil Fruit – something that’s normally impossible. Blackbeard’s entire rise to power can be linked back to this dangerous and unique ability.
Human Human Fruit, Model: Nika
The Fruit Luffy Needed To Become Not Only A Pirate, But A Liberator
- User: Luffy
- Type: Zoan
Luffy always dreamed of being a pirate, but his Devil Fruit ability was crucial to his success. It gave him the stretchy body he needed to boost his attacks and defeat powerful enemies like Arlong and Enel early in his journey. Essentially, the fruit allowed him to become a strong enough pirate captain to build a crew and pursue the ultimate treasure, the One Piece – though his journey involves much more than just his powers.
The Wano arc reveals Luffy’s Devil Fruit ability is connected to Nikka, a sun god representing freedom worldwide. Because of this, people Luffy has met on his journey now see him as a symbol of hope and liberation – a far cry from when he first set sail with Koby in the Romance Dawn saga.
Op Op Fruit
Law Has Saved His, And Countless Other Lives, With His Creative Devil Fruit
- User: Law
- Type: Paramecia
When Law was a child, he contracted a fatal illness called Amber Lead Disease. Despite Corazon’s best efforts, there was no known cure. Ultimately, Corazon gave Law a Devil Fruit, hoping it would help, and thankfully, it did. The Opi Opi Fruit is a very powerful and complicated Devil Fruit, but essentially, it allows the user to break down anything nearby.
Law discovered early on that he could use his ability to heal himself, even curing diseases. This power also made him a skilled surgeon, simplifying complex operations. It ultimately led him to assemble a unique team of devoted pirates. Without this ability, Law wouldn’t have become a pirate, and in fact, he might not even be alive in the story, emphasizing how crucial it is to his life and experiences.
Revive Revive Fruit
Brook’s Fruit Has Given Him A Second Chance To Reach His Dreams
- User: Brook
- Type: Paramecia
The world of *One Piece* features many different races, but living skeletons are rare. Brook is unique because he can transform into a skeleton thanks to the Revive Revive Fruit. This fruit brought him back to life after he and his crew perished, but it also caused his skin to decay, leaving only his skeleton and his signature afro. He was able to sing to his crewmates in their final moments, and then surprisingly received a second chance at life.
After being unexpectedly revived and stuck on the eerie Thriller Bark for some time, he eventually joined Luffy’s crew and has been a steadfast friend ever since. Being brought back to life and given a new opportunity to pursue his dream was a huge turning point, and it really shows how surprisingly powerful a Devil Fruit ability can be, even if the user doesn’t understand it completely.
