Destiny 2: How to Get Thorn Catalyst (& What It Does)

As a seasoned Destiny 2 gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I think about the iconic Thorn hand cannon. Its ominous presence in promotional materials for both Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 left an indelible mark on me and many other players. The anticipation to get our hands on this legendary weapon was palpable, but it wasn’t until Season of the Wish that we were given the means to enhance it with its long-awaited catalyst.

As a dedicated gamer of Destiny 2, I can’t help but feel nostalgic when talking about the legendary weapon that is Thorn. Its presence was prominent in all promotional materials leading up to even the first release of Destiny 1. Although technically it has had a catalyst since season 6 in Destiny 2, sadly enough, we players have yet to get our hands on it.

As a dedicated fan of Destiny 2, I couldn’t help but ponder over the mystery surrounding the release of the elusive catalyst for Thorn. With each new season, my curiosity grew stronger as I wondered when (or even if) we would finally get to witness its debut. And then, lo and behold, Season of the Wish graced us with its presence, bringing along the long-awaited catalyst for Thorn. Here’s a simple guide on how to acquire this coveted item and enhance the infamous weapon:

How to Get the Thorn Catalyst

One way to rephrase this information in a clear and conversational tone is: Obtaining catalysts for certain Exotics can be accomplished through quests, particularly with older seasonal weapons. However, Thorn’s catalyst does not follow this rule. Instead, it mainly drops at random from completing core activities like Crucible matches, Gambit runs, or Vanguard Ops. Despite the low probability, each activity completion offers a possibility to acquire the Thorn catalyst.

If a catalyst other than Thorn’s drops instead, there is still a possibility that it won’t be the one you’re looking for. Consequently, your success in obtaining it relies solely on the randomness of the game. Some players may get lucky and acquire it quickly, while others might never see it appear at all.

Luckily, Xur offers an alternative method to obtain the Thorn catalyst. Every weekend, he sets up shop at the Tower, where he sells a selection of Exotic merchandise. Among his offerings are usually two catalysts, and it’s possible that the Thorn catalyst could be among them. Each catalyst costs 71 Strange Coins. Be sure to save enough coins or get close to having that amount beforehand. Strange Coins can be obtained through completing core playlist activities; you typically receive two to four per completion.

What Does the Thorn Catalyst Do?

After acquiring the catalyst required for Thorn, you must rack up 500 kills using this weapon to trigger the catalyst and boost Thorn’s abilities. Once this milestone is achieved, Thorn will be endowed with the following enhancements.

Range

+15

Stability

+5

Airborne Effectiveness

+5

  • Refined Soul: Kills and absorbing a Remnant grants additional increased weapon range, as well as increased mobility and handling.

As a fan of hand cannons, I’m thrilled about the minor yet significant improvement of an additional 15 range for Thorn. The enhanced reach, coupled with the extended range when Refined Soul procs, will undeniably make hitting targets a smoother experience. Furthermore, Thorn’s compatibility with Necrotic Grips makes it a must-have weapon for any poison build. And with the Catalyst in the mix, this gun becomes even more formidable.
