This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
As a huge One Piece fan, I always thought Vice Admiral Garp was the sole hero of the God Valley Incident! For years, the story painted him as the one who defeated Rocks D. Xebec and protected the Celestial Dragons. But it turns out the World Government wasn’t telling us the whole truth – Garp wasn’t the only one responsible for that victory, and the official story isn’t quite accurate!
Many individuals played a crucial role in the events of God Valley. Recent chapters of *One Piece* have revealed that Monkey D. Dragon was likely responsible for rescuing a large number of people there.
Monkey D. Dragon Was The Hero Of God Valley
Dragon Saved Kuma, Shanks, And Shamrock

- Dragon shot a Celestial Dragon to save Kuma
- Dragon protected Shanks and Shamrock
The God Valley Incident happened 38 years before the present day. Back then, Monkey D. Dragon was a regular Marine, not someone important with special abilities. He was simply a soldier following orders. His commander instructed him to shoot civilians, which surprised and troubled him. Dragon’s sense of right and wrong made him doubt whether he should fire on unarmed people.
I’ve really done it now. —Monkey D. Dragon
Dragon spotted a Celestial Dragon attempting to kill Kuma, valuing his life at 10,000. Dragon intervened, defeating the Celestial Dragon. This proved crucial, as Kuma later used his Devil Fruit powers to save countless lives. Had Kuma died, the consequences would have been devastating, drastically altering the course of the One Piece world. Without Kuma’s survival, Ivankov and Ginny likely wouldn’t have made it through the events at God Valley, and Bonney would never have been born, as Ginny’s fate was tied to his.

The Straw Hat Pirates would have been destroyed by Admiral Kizaru at Sabaody Archipelago if it weren’t for Dragon’s help. Dragon’s actions extended to God Valley, where he encountered Shanks and his mother, Shamrock. She pleaded with him to save her sons from Figarland Garling. Despite understanding the danger, Dragon located the twins and successfully rescued them.
Many fans are aware that Shanks was found inside a treasure chest and taken with the Roger Pirates, and it’s strongly suggested Dragon was the one who put him there. A curious detail is how Shamrock came to be with Garling. Since Dragon had both children, they were likely kept together. This means either Garling intentionally took only Shamrock, or Dragon separated them. It’s also important to remember that if Dragon hadn’t rescued Shanks, Luffy would have been killed by Higuma.
Dragon Learned The Truth Of The World On God Valley
Dragon Wants To Free The World

- Dragon found out the truth about the Celestial Dragons
- He formed the Revolutionary Army afterward
Dragon was deeply connected to what happened in God Valley. He wasn’t just a key player in the event itself, but it fundamentally changed his view of the World Government. He saw firsthand how cruelly the Celestial Dragons treated ordinary people, like they were worthless. He also understood that the Marines weren’t acting to help everyone – their main purpose was to protect the Celestial Dragons and allow them to act with impunity.
Having seen terrible things, Dragon felt he had to take action. He probably left the Marines after the events at God Valley and started a group called the Freedom Fighters. Driven by a desire to improve the world, he was branded a criminal by the World Government. After the destruction of Ohara, Dragon understood that simply being peaceful wouldn’t be enough to overcome the World Government’s cruelty, so he created the Revolutionary Army.

Dragon teamed up with powerful allies like Ivankov, Bartholomew Kuma, and Ginny, all united by a common goal. This led to the Revolutionary Army becoming a major problem for the World Government, who labeled Dragon the ‘Worst Criminal in the World’ because they saw his actions as outright rebellion. Since then, Dragon has grown significantly, continuing to help people. Many fans hope the author, Oda, will reveal more about his backstory and role as the leader of the Revolutionary Army.
