This article contains spoilers for the One Piece manga.
Eiichiro Oda’s *One Piece* is a long-running story, now over 28 years in the making, and continues to captivate audiences with each new story arc. The current arc, Elbaf, has unveiled significant revelations, including the lineage of Xebec and Blackbeard. However, they aren’t the only characters with legendary ancestors – figures like Vivi and Zoro also have important family histories that could play a crucial role in the story.
Xebec
Descendant of Davy D. Jones

Rocks D. Xebec has been a prominent and mysterious character in One Piece, and fans have been waiting to learn more about his backstory. The recent flashback arc set in Elbaf finally provided some answers, revealing a great deal about Xebec, most surprisingly his full name: Davy D. Xebec.
Viewers were aware that Xebec revered the pirate Davy Jones, but the fact that they were family came as a surprise. Davy D. Jones is still largely unknown, though some believe he was a pirate as powerful as Joy Boy, who lived during the mysterious Void Century.
Blackbeard
Descendant of Davy D. Jones

Recently, the One Piece story revealed a lot about Blackbeard’s origins. The Elbaf flashback showed he’s the son of Rocks D. Xebec, leading many to believe his birth name was Rocks D. Teach. However, it was later discovered that ‘Rocks’ isn’t a family name at all. Instead, Blackbeard comes from the Davy D. Family, meaning he’s a descendant of Davy D. Jones, just like his father.
Vivi
Descendant of Nerfertari D. Lili
Vivi was an important character early in the One Piece story, but her role lessened when she chose to remain in Arabasta. However, recent events at the Reverie have brought her back into focus, especially the surprising revelation that Vivi and her family, the Nerfertari, are part of the mysterious ‘D’ group. The author, Oda, also introduced Nerfertari D. Lili, a legendary ancestor of Vivi and a former Queen of Arabasta. Lili had a connection with Imu, and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance are still unknown.
Sanji
Descendant of Sora and Vinsmoke Royalties
During the Whole Cake Island arc, we learned a lot more about Sanji’s past. Many fans were surprised to discover he wasn’t just any cook, but a member of the powerful Vinsmoke royal family.
The Vinsmoke family isn’t currently at the peak of their power, but they were once a dominant force in the North Blue many years ago. There’s also a possibility that Sanji is related to Sora, a legendary warrior of the sea, who likely had ties to the Vinsmokes during the mysterious Void Century.
Cricket
Descendant of Mont Blanc Noland

Cricket is a character introduced in the Jaya arc who became fascinating when his connection to Mont Blanc Noland was revealed. Noland is a famous, but tragic, figure in the world of *One Piece*. He was falsely accused of lying about the lost City of Gold, leading to his downfall.
Wyper
Descendant of Kalgara

Similar to what we learned about Cricket, the Skypiea arc showed us the family history of Wyper. Wyper is a Shandian warrior who turned out to be a descendant of Kalgara, a close friend of Noland. Like Noland, Kalgara also met a sad end in the world of *One Piece*.
Little Oars Jr
Descendant of Oars

Little Oars Jr. played a significant role in the massive Summit War in *One Piece*, where the Whitebeard Pirates fought to rescue Ace from the Navy. He was a unique character, especially since fans had already been introduced to his ancestor, Oars, during the Thriller Bark arc. Oars was a giant who lived hundreds of years ago and was turned into a special zombie by Moria.
Zoro
Descendant of Ryuma

I’ve been a Ryuma fan for ages, and it totally blew my mind when it was revealed how he’s connected to Zoro! We always knew they looked alike, but Oda finally confirmed it with Zoro’s family history. Turns out they’re both part of the Shimotsuki Family! Zoro’s grandmother was actually from Wano and left about 50 years ago, which explains the connection. It’s such a cool reveal and adds so much depth to both characters!
The newest chapter of One Piece, Chapter 1161, will be released this week, as usual on Sundays. While it becomes available in Japan at midnight on Monday (JST), most fans around the world will be able to read it on September 28, 2025. The chapter will be available for free on Manga Plus.
