Final Fantasy is a popular Japanese role-playing game series known for its unforgettable characters. Players quickly become invested in the heroes and their struggles as they fight to win against difficult challenges.
Fans enjoy rooting for their favorite characters in the *Final Fantasy* series, but they also love to dislike the villains who constantly oppose the heroes. Sometimes, even the well-intentioned characters receive criticism, though players usually come to appreciate their role in the story over time.
Sephiroth
A Beloved Villain Who Has Committed Some Truly Heinous Acts
Sephiroth is one of the most famous villains in video game history, and players have a strangely complex relationship with him – they love to hate him. His intimidating nature made *Final Fantasy 7* incredibly captivating, and many were thrilled to briefly play as him during a flashback sequence.
Despite his initial appeal, players also deeply resent Sephiroth when he shockingly kills Aerith with his Masamune, making him a truly detestable villain. This fuels the heroes’ determination to finally defeat him in the latter part of *Final Fantasy 7*.
Kefka Palazzo
The Mad Jester Is An Easy Villain To Love And Hate In Equal Measure
Okay, so Kefka from *Final Fantasy 6* is seriously one of the best villains ever. He’s this crazy, charismatic jester who just draws you in. For a while, you think he’s working for Emperor Gestahl, being a loyal servant and all. But then, BAM! Total betrayal on the Floating Continent. He stabs Gestahl in the back and steals the power of the Warring Triad for himself. It’s such a classic villain move, and it really makes him stand out!
Despite being a funny and engaging character, fans haven’t forgotten that he murdered General Leo and caused widespread destruction. Reuniting the team for a final attack on Kefka’s castle is incredibly satisfying, allowing players to finally hold this truly tyrannical villain accountable.
Seymour Guado
A Compelling Villain Who Stands In The Heroes’ Way Time And Time Again
Seymour appears to be another character whose beliefs cloud his judgment, but that doesn’t justify what he does. He’s a compelling villain, and his battles are among the most exciting and unforgettable in the game.
Even though Seymour is a skilled player, people quickly turn against him when they realize how manipulative he is. Attempts to force Yuna into marriage and the well-known battle with him are moments that frustrate even his most dedicated supporters.
Noctis Lucis Caelum
His Standoffish Attitude Is Unappealing, But Fans Slowly Warm Up To Him Over Time
Fans had differing opinions about the look of the main characters in *Final Fantasy 15*, which some described as a boy band. However, watching their strong friendship and teamwork as they fought to protect their world from the villain Ardyn made it easy to appreciate them.
Fans have varying opinions on Noctis, one of the main characters, as he sometimes comes across as distant and overly dramatic. A lot of players disliked the decision to seemingly dismiss Ignis’s sacrifice, even though Noctis later made a heroic one of his own to defeat the Starscourge in *Final Fantasy 15*.
Lightning
Final Fantasy 13’s Poor Reception Meant That Its Protagonist Was Bound To Get Some Flak
Because *Final Fantasy 13* isn’t a fan favorite, it’s not surprising that its characters often receive criticism. Lightning, in particular, is frequently compared unfavorably to Cloud, with some fans dismissing her as a poor imitation.
Although she can sometimes seem overly aggressive, it’s easy to see why she’s frustrated – her sister is in danger. Some players initially dislike her, but grow to love Lightning as they get to know her. Others who stop playing *Final Fantasy 13* never quite understand what makes her a compelling character.
Squall Leonhart
Arguably, The Most Misunderstood Final Fantasy Protagonist Of All Time
Final Fantasy 8 is a somewhat controversial game, released after one of the most highly-regarded video games of all time. While it has some flaws, many fans grow to love it if they play it.
It’s really frustrating when people stop playing *Final Fantasy 8* before the end, because they miss out on seeing just how much Squall grows as a person! Everyone always calls him the most emo *Final Fantasy* hero, but that’s just because they don’t see *why* he acts that way. He comes across as kind of rude and keeps to himself, but it turns out he’s really struggling with feeling like he’s not good enough. The game does a great job of showing him work through those feelings, and it leads to a really touching moment where he finally accepts himself and reconnects with Rinoa. It’s honestly a beautiful arc!
Tidus
His Chirpy Attitude Can Be Very Overbearing, At Times
Tidus can be a frustrating character when you first meet him. His naive and relentlessly optimistic personality isn’t always appealing, and he often comes across as a bit clueless. He fits the mold of a typical, sometimes predictable, hero from many Japanese action stories.
As Tidus falls in love with Yuna and understands his purpose in Spira, he grows into a dependable hero. Even those who initially disliked him recognize that the powerful ending of *Final Fantasy 10* relies on his relationship with Yuna, proving how significant he was to the story’s outcome.
Prompto Argentum
His Overly Upbeat Personality Makes Him Slightly Annoying
Prompto is a generally upbeat character from *Final Fantasy*, though he can occasionally be irritating. He’s different from the other main characters, who tend to be more serious – some players find his silly personality doesn’t quite fit with the overall tone.
Initially unsure of himself, Prompto eventually becomes a loyal friend and incredibly talented photographer, documenting the group’s incredible journey. His dedicated episode beautifully explores his backstory, earning even those who disliked him a new appreciation for his character.
