The *Persona* series is a long-time favorite among JRPG fans, but the new release, *Digimon Story: Time Stranger*, has quickly surpassed it in player numbers on Steam. Launched just last week to generally positive feedback, *Digimon Story: Time Stranger* is proving to be a major success and is on track to become one of the most popular *Digimon* games of all time.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a role-playing game where you build a team of Digimon, train them, and help them evolve. The game’s story involves time travel and is filled with nods to the original Digimon anime, making it a treat for long-time fans. It’s become incredibly popular on Steam, quickly becoming one of the platform’s most successful Japanese RPGs.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger Player Count Compared to Persona 5
According to GamesRadar, *Digimon Story: Time Stranger* has become a surprising success on Steam, even surpassing popular JRPGs like *Persona* and *Final Fantasy* in player numbers. Currently, *Digimon Story: Time Stranger* has reached a peak of 84,458 concurrent players. To put that in perspective, *Persona 5 Royal* peaked at 35,298. Only two JRPGs have seen more players on Steam: *Metaphor: ReFantazio* with 85,961 and *Granblue Fantasy: Relink* with 114,054.
Okay, so *Digimon Story: Time Stranger* is clearly doing really well, which is awesome and hopefully means we’ll get even more ambitious *Digimon* games down the line. But there’s something I’ve been thinking about. Remember when *Persona 5* finally hit Steam? It was like, six years after it came out on PlayStation! A lot of us *Persona* fans had probably already played it by then, which might explain why it didn’t have *huge* numbers on Steam. But it’s weird that *Time Stranger*’s player count is still lower than another Atlus RPG, *Metaphor: ReFantazio*, you know?
When *Persona 6* is released, if it’s available on Steam at the same time as other platforms, it’s likely to be more popular than *Digimon Story: Time Stranger*, though we’ll have to wait and see. *Digimon Story: Time Stranger* is getting positive feedback and attracting both longtime fans and new players. It would be interesting to know how well it’s selling on consoles, and hopefully we’ll get some official sales numbers soon.
