It had been 13 years – both in the real world and within the game’s story – since the original *Alan Wake* when *Alan Wake 2* was released. During that time, Remedy Entertainment created other games and cleverly connected *Control* with the *Alan Wake* series, building a shared universe. *Alan Wake 2* plays similarly to the first game, but the levels are more open, allowing for greater exploration and interaction. The game is packed with content and is much longer than its predecessor. So, just how many chapters does *Alan Wake 2* actually have?
Since this article mentions chapter names, there are spoilers ahead. Proceed with caution.
How Many Chapters Are in Alan Wake 2?
Alan Wake 2 has a total of 19 chapters, though the opening chapter is a short prologue where you don’t control either of the main characters, Saga or Alan. If you don’t include the prologue, the game has 18 chapters. You’ll play as Saga in nine of these chapters, and as Alan in the other nine. Each character has their own separate story and missions that combine to create the full narrative of Alan Wake 2. Here’s a list of the chapter names.
Saga Anderson | Alan Wake |
Return 1: Invitation | Initiation 1: Late Night |
Return 2: The Heart | Initiation 2: Casey |
Return 3: Local Girl | Initiation 3: Haunting |
Return 4: No Chance | Initiation 4: We Sing |
Return 5: Old Gods | Initiation 5: Room 665 |
Return 6: Scratch | Initiation 6: Return |
Return 7: Summoning | Initiation 7: Masks |
Return 8: Deerfest | Initiation 8: Zane’s Film |
Return 9: Come Home | Initiation 9: Gone |
When you first start playing, you’ll only control Saga Anderson. After finishing the story segment called “Return 2: The Heart,” you’ll unlock Alan’s story and begin “Initiation 1: Late Night.” Once you complete “Initiation 2: Casey,” you’ll be able to switch between playing as Saga and Alan whenever you want, though with some limitations. You can do this by interacting with a dark puddle found at certain save points throughout the game.
So, as you play, the game will sometimes automatically switch between characters once you hit certain story beats. It’s kind of like a built-in mechanic to keep things moving. And near the end, get ready to control both characters at the same time in a few chapters – it gets pretty intense!
Alan Wake 2 features two expansions, ‘Night Springs’ and ‘The Lake House.’ ‘Night Springs’ is made up of three episodes – ‘Number One Fan,’ ‘North Star,’ and ‘Time Breaker’ – which you’ll find playing on TVs within the Dark Place. You can watch them whenever you like without affecting your main game progress. As for ‘The Lake House,’ you’ll get a definite chance to start it with Estevez before it becomes unavailable.
How Long Does It Take To Complete Alan Wake 2?
Alan Wake 2 is a lengthy game, especially compared to most horror titles. It features two main storylines, similar to Resident Evil 2, and you need to finish both Saga’s and Alan’s campaigns to see the complete ending. However, you can focus on one character’s story until a certain point, after which the game will switch you to the other character’s perspective.
Playing through the main story of Alan Wake 2 will likely take around 20 hours. If you aim to complete everything, including all side content and the two short expansions (each lasting 1-2 hours), you can expect to spend about 30 hours total.
