The lead behind the popular Assassin’s Creed games has stepped down, but reports suggest he didn’t choose to leave voluntarily.
Marc-Alexis Côté, who previously led production of the Assassin’s Creed games, recently left Ubisoft. This news came just weeks after Ubisoft and Tencent launched their new collaborative studio, Vantage Studios.
Ubisoft officially announced that Côté was leaving to pursue other opportunities, which sparked curiosity about his departure after dedicating so much time to the game series.
Côté recently explained on LinkedIn (as reported by VGC) that he didn’t choose to leave his position; the decision wasn’t his.
“I Did Not Make That Choice”
In a recent post, Côté shared that many people who reached out after his departure from Ubisoft asked him why he would leave the Assassin’s Creed franchise, especially given how much he cared about it.
In response to them, he says, “The truth is simple: I did not make that choice.”
It seems Ubisoft decided to change who leads the Assassin’s Creed games to better fit their new way of organizing things.
Both Côté and Vantage Studios co-CEO Christophe Derennes have said he was offered a different role, but it wouldn’t have allowed him to continue building on his previous work on the franchise in the same way, so he turned it down.
In an email to staff, Derennes explained that Côté had his own vision and goals for Vantage Studios and how it should develop.
Côté says he holds no hard feelings towards Ubisoft for their choice. He’s been with the company his entire career, starting as a level designer on Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood back in 2005.
I want to be clear: I wasn’t the one who left. I remained in my role until Ubisoft requested that I leave. – Marc-Alexis Côté
Patrice Désilets’ exit from the Assassin’s Creed series follows the launch of Vantage Studios and recent news about a planned game set after the American Civil War. This game would have uniquely allowed players to experience the story of a formerly enslaved Black man battling the Ku Klux Klan.
The game’s development was halted because its themes were considered overly political, particularly following the recent debate around featuring Yasuke, a Black samurai, as a playable character in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
