This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.
Monkey D. Luffy is the main character of One Piece and is now considered one of the series’ strongest fighters. Following the events in the Wano Country arc, Luffy proved his power by defeating Kaido, one of the Four Emperors. As a result, Luffy himself has become one of the Four Emperors, solidifying his status as an incredibly powerful character.
Although Luffy’s Devil Fruit ability has awakened and he’s using it to its fullest right now, he’s still not at his peak. Many believe his ultimate power-up is still coming, likely during a massive, upcoming war where he’ll confront Imu and finally defeat the World Government. Most fans expect this final transformation to be ‘Final Gear,’ and they’re eagerly anticipating its reveal by the author, Oda.
Luffy Will Get One More Power-Up After Gear 5
Gear 5 Luffy Is Still Weaker Than Rocks
- Rocks was stronger than Luffy at God Valley
- Rocks still lost to Imu
Many viewers think Luffy’s ‘Gears’ are always new powers from his Devil Fruit. However, that’s not always the case. Gear 2 increased his strength by speeding up his blood flow, and Gear 3 let him inflate his bones. While Gear 4 involved inflating his muscles, it also relied heavily on Luffy mastering Armament Haki – coating his body with a powerful force – to build tension and become a more effective fighter.

Essentially, Haki is crucial to Gear 4. Gear 5, on the other hand, was purely a result of Luffy awakening his Devil Fruit. However, Luffy’s Haki can still improve, and he’ll likely find new and creative ways to use it, ultimately leading to the development of a ‘Final Gear.’
I’ve been watching the fights closely, and while Luffy’s Gear 5 is incredibly powerful – definitely stronger than Kaido, and possibly even the Elders – it just doesn’t seem like enough to take on someone like Imu, or even Blackbeard. We know Rocks D. Xebec was defeated by Imu, and Gear 5 isn’t on that level of power. Honestly, based on what I’ve seen, Luffy still has a long way to go before he can beat someone as formidable as Imu.

Luffy Will Not Beat Imu Without A New Gear
Luffy Vs Imu Is Inevitable
If Luffy hopes to defeat Imu, he’ll likely need to unlock a new Gear. While Luffy is powerful, he isn’t currently strong enough to win against someone like Imu. Many fans believe this new Gear will be a variation of his Gear 5, similar to how Gear 4 had different forms like Snakeman, Tankman, and Bounceman.
Later in the story of One Piece, Luffy is expected to master a powerful version of Conqueror’s Haki – strong enough to harm even those who can’t be killed. Combining this with his Gear abilities will unlock Luffy’s ultimate form, and fans are incredibly excited to see what that will look like.
The newest chapter of One Piece, Chapter 1163, will be released in two weeks, as usual on a Sunday. While it becomes available in Japan at midnight on Monday (JST), most fans around the world will be able to read it on October 26, 2025. You can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus.
