We’re likely to hear a big announcement at the Halo World Championship on October 24th, but I’m not thrilled about it. The event will reveal what Halo Studios (previously 343 Industries) has been developing since the mixed reception to Halo Infinite. While it’s best not to assume the worst, this new project could mean a significant shift for the Halo franchise.
The Halo franchise is deeply connected to the Xbox brand. When Microsoft entered the console market in 2001, it faced a tough challenge. Established competitors like SEGA, Nintendo, and Sony already had strong brand recognition. SEGA had Sonic, Nintendo had Mario, and Sony was known for games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and Tekken, along with its own exclusive titles like Crash Bandicoot.
Microsoft needed to establish itself in the emerging world of video games, so it took a risk on a game called Halo: Combat Evolved. That game went on to become incredibly influential, shaping the future of first-person shooters and online multiplayer, and ultimately helped Microsoft become a major player in the gaming industry, potentially preventing it from failing early on.
Halo Studios Is Rumored to Reveal a Halo PS5 Game on October 24
Halo on PlayStation Rumors, Explained
If you’ve been following Microsoft news recently, you probably know about their surprising move away from making games exclusive to Xbox. Over the past few years, they started releasing games like Sea of Thieves and Pentiment on PlayStation, which were good games but not major hits. Then, highly anticipated titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Forza Horizon 5 also appeared on PS5, leading people to wonder how committed Microsoft was to exclusive games. For many, the recent release of the original Gears of War on PlayStation seemed to confirm that Xbox was abandoning its strategy of having games you could only play on their consoles.
Recent successes make a Halo release on PlayStation 5 seem possible, but a recent online post has added fuel to the speculation. A well-known Halo data miner, grunt.api, shared a simple image of the PS5 logo, followed by a mention of the upcoming Halo World Championship. Industry expert Rebs Gaming clarified that this suggests a new Halo game is coming to PS5, potentially a remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, which has been a subject of rumors for a while.

The image description for a logo related to grunt.api’s PlayStation 5 version says “Switch” with a red X, hinting that the speculated multiplatform Halo game might not be released on Nintendo Switch.
As a PlayStation Owner, the Possibility of Halo Coming to PS5 Saddens Me
I switched to the PlayStation 3 when I was around thirteen. I used to play mostly on the Xbox 360, but games like Uncharted 2, InFamous 2, and The Last of Us made me want a PlayStation more and more. Now, years later, I’m glad I chose to build my game library on PlayStation – it has a lot more exclusive games that I really enjoy.

I’ve always been an Xbox fan and hoped the company would succeed. Like many people my age, I grew up playing Halo. While it wasn’t flawless, each new Halo release felt like a major event for Xbox, something to get excited about. It even gave me a reason to revisit my older Xbox consoles, and I generally enjoyed the games. However, if Sony were to acquire Halo, it would lose its special status as an Xbox exclusive. It would just become another shooter competing with games like Call of Duty and Fortnite. I worry that Halo might not survive in that environment, and that would be a real loss for gamers, no matter which console they prefer.
