Players of Pokemon know that every creature in the game has six key stats: Hit Points, Attack, Special Attack, Defense, Special Defense, and Speed. These stats work together to determine how well a Pokemon performs in battle. For example, Pokemon with high Speed and Attack are good at quickly defeating opponents, while those with high Defense and Special Defense are strong protectors. Different combinations of stats create different battle styles.
Most Pokémon are well-rounded, with stats spread fairly evenly across all areas. However, Game Freak has occasionally created Pokémon that excel in just one particular stat, leaving the others underdeveloped. This might be intentional, to fit the Pokémon’s story, or for gameplay balance. Here are eight of the most famous examples of this unusual design choice in the history of the Pokémon franchise.
Wobbuffet – HP
It’s A Living Punching Bag

- HP: 190
- Base Stat Total: 405
Okay, so you often see Pokemon with really weird stat spreads, and it’s usually for those that are built around one specific battle strategy – a gimmick, basically. A classic example is Wobbuffet. It was introduced way back in the Gold and Silver games, and honestly, it’s designed like a punching bag! That idea really shows in how its stats are set up.
Wobbuffet’s greatest strength is its incredibly high HP – a total of 190, making it the third-healthiest Pokémon in the series. This is fitting, as Wobbuffet is designed to withstand attacks and reflect them back using moves like Counter and Mirror Coat.
Ninjask – Speed
It’s A Lightning-Fast Ninja (And Not Much More…)

- Speed: 160
- Base Stat Total: 456
Ninjask’s design and abilities clearly draw inspiration from both cicadas and ninjas. This combination is reflected in its incredible speed – with a Speed stat of 160, it’s one of the fastest Pokémon in the entire series, even faster than many legendary ones.
The problem with Ninjask is that its incredible speed is its only real strength in battle. It lacks the power to inflict significant damage and isn’t durable enough to take many hits. Because of this, Ninjask usually relies on rapidly delivering a series of attacks, knowing it will likely be defeated by a stronger opponent’s single, powerful move.
Rampardos – Attack
It Lives Up To The Title Of “Ultimate Spear”

- Attack: 165
- Base Stat Total: 495
Game Freak created an interesting theme for the fossil Pokémon in Generation Four, basing them on the classic idea of an unstoppable force versus an immovable object. This is reflected in their stats: Bastiodon is incredibly durable with high Defense and Special Defense, while Rampardos focuses entirely on powerful Attack.
Rampardos is a classic example of a “glass cannon” Pokémon – it hits incredibly hard with its high Attack stat (165), but is easily defeated due to its low Speed and defenses. While it has a cool design and interesting idea behind it, its unbalanced stats have always held it back in battle.
Aggron – Defense
Could Have Been A Decent Defensive Wall (If It Wasn’t For Its Horrible Typing)

- Defense: 180
- Base Stat Total: 530
It’s no surprise that Aggron is incredibly durable – it’s basically a massive, steel-armored monster! With a Defense stat of 180, it can withstand most physical attacks. However, its weaker Special Defense means powerful special moves can easily defeat it.
Aggron had the potential to be a very strong defensive Pokémon, but its combination of Steel and Rock types holds it back. While seemingly powerful, this typing makes it doubly weak against Fighting and Ground attacks – two common and powerful attack types in the game. The developers at Game Freak likely recognized this issue, which is why Mega Aggron trades its Rock typing for an extra 50 points of Defense, making it a much more effective defensive Pokémon.
Chansey And Blissey – HP
Famous For Having The Highest HP Stat In The Entire Franchise

- HP: 250 / 255
- Base Stat Total: 450 / 540
Chansey and its evolved form, Blissey, are built to be healers in battle. This means they need to be able to withstand a lot of damage so they have time to restore their team’s health. Chansey already has a high overall stat of 250, and what’s even more remarkable is that, even before fully evolving, it can use an Eviolite to further increase its defenses.
Blissey is the ultimate healing Pokémon, boasting the highest HP of any Pokémon in the entire series – a massive 255! Its incredible health means it can withstand a huge amount of damage, and fans often joke that even powerful, super-effective attacks take nearly a full minute to bring it down in battle.
Xurkitree – Special Attack
This Bizarre Ultra Beast Certainly Packs A Punch

- Special Attack: 173
- Base Stat Total: 570
Ultra Beasts are all created to excel in a specific area, such as attack power, defense, or speed. While most are well-rounded with several strong abilities, Xurkitree (known as UB-03 Lightning) is famous for having an incredibly powerful Special Attack, but lacking in almost everything else.
Xurkitree is a powerful special attacker, ranking sixth overall in the Pokémon franchise (fourth if you exclude Mega Evolutions). This allows it to hit hard with moves like Thunderbolt and Energy Ball. What makes Xurkitree especially dangerous is its ability to learn Tail Glow, a move that instantly boosts its already impressive Special Attack by two levels.
Regice – Special Defense
A Classic Legendary Pokemon With Questionable Stat Distribution

- Special Defense: 200
- Base Stat Total: 580
Legendary Pokémon are known for being incredibly strong and resilient, but sometimes their stats don’t quite match up to expectations. A good example is Regice, one of the legendary giants from Generation Three, which boasts an impressive Special Defense stat of 200 – the second highest in the entire series.
On paper, Regice seems strong against special attacks, but in practice, its low HP and Defense make it easily defeated by even moderately strong physical attacks. This has consistently made it the weakest of the legendary giants, and it’s rarely, if ever, used in competitive battles.
Deoxys (Speed Forme) – Speed
This Shape-Shifting Legendary Can Move At Extreme Speeds

- Speed: 180
- Base Stat Total: 600
Deoxys is a powerful Legendary Pokémon famous for changing between four forms: Normal, Attack, Defense, and Speed. Most of its forms have at least two very high stats, making it a formidable opponent. The only exception is its Speed Forme.
Deoxys’ Speed Forme lives up to its name with an incredible Speed stat of 180, making it the fastest Pokémon in the series. However, its other stats aren’t as strong compared to its other forms, which makes it less effective in battles. Since its Attack Forme already boasts a very high Speed of 150, there’s usually no good reason to choose the weaker Speed Forme.
