Players of Ghost of Yotei think a new detail in the game suggests which ending from the original Ghost of Tsushima is the official one. This continues a long history of the game developers, Sucker Punch, being unclear about which ending is considered the true ending.
Ending spoilers for Ghost of Tsushima and minor spoilers for Ghost of Yotei ahead.
From the start, Sucker Punch made it clear that Ghost of Yotei, announced in September 2024, would be set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. This meant Jin Sakai, the hero of the first game, wouldn’t be alive during the sequel’s story. While the developers didn’t say how much the sequel would acknowledge him, they confirmed it wouldn’t be limited to just small references or hidden Easter eggs – Jin Sakai will indeed be part of the story.
Ghost of Yotei Possibly References Ghost of Tsushima’s ‘Spare’ Ending
The area known as Ghost of Yotei marks where Jin is buried. It’s a location you won’t likely overlook. Players have noticed the grave is covered in red leaves from Japanese maple trees, a visual element also strongly connected to the ending of Ghost of Tsushima where Jin chooses to spare Lord Shimura. Some believe this detail confirms that ending as the definitive one. Others suggest the Japanese maple is simply a symbol of the Sakai clan and appears in both possible endings, though it’s more prominent when Jin spares Shimura.
Sucker Punch Keeps Sending Mixed Signals About Ghost of Tsushima Canon Ending
Following the release of Ghost of Tsushima in July 2020, director Nate Fox initially stated that choosing to spare Lord Shimura represented the game’s “true ending” during an interview with Kinda Funny Gamescast. However, the developers later seemed to backtrack on this statement, creating confusion about which ending was official. More recently, just before the release of Ghost of Yotei, Fox clarified in a MinnMax interview that “both endings are valid” and refused to confirm either one as the definitive canon.
GoT Director Saying Sparing Lord Shimura Is the ‘True Ending’ (July 2020)
GoT Director Saying ‘Both Endings Are Valid’ (September 2025)
It’s unclear if the red leaves truly prove Lord Shimura is still alive after the first game, but according to recent comments from the developers, it may not even be important for the sequel. The creators seem to be treating the series as a collection of standalone stories, meaning fans might not get a firm answer about what officially happened in the first game, or any answer that stays consistent. By setting the new game 300 years later, Ghost of Yotei can be enjoyed even if you haven’t played Ghost of Tsushima, making it accessible to everyone.
