Recent changes to the Halo Insider program hint that upcoming Halo games might be playable on PlayStation consoles. This marks a shift for the traditionally Xbox-exclusive sci-fi shooter series, and a welcome change for PlayStation fans. It appears the next Halo installment will be available on PS5, and PlayStation users could even get a chance to help test future games before they’re released.
Following months of speculation, Microsoft officially announced on October 24th that Halo: Combat Evolved is being remade by Halo Studios and will be released on PlayStation. Though leaks and hints from Xbox leadership suggested this change, it’s still a significant reveal. For the first time, PlayStation players will be able to experience Halo on their preferred console, and Microsoft plans to release more Halo games on the platform in the future.
Halo Insider Update Suggests Playtesting Will Open Up to PlayStation Consoles
A recent update to the Halo Insider program’s website, noticed by grunt.api on X (formerly Twitter), now lets users identify their preferred console as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 5, or PlayStation 5 Pro. This suggests that PlayStation players will soon be able to participate in early testing (‘flighting’) for future Halo games. While it’s unknown if the next test will include PlayStation users for a game like Halo: Combat Evolved, Microsoft has stated that Halo will be available on PlayStation going forward. This means the first PlayStation playtests could be for the sequel to Halo: Infinite or another upcoming title.
With Halo coming to PlayStation, it’s logical that the developers, Halo Studios, would want to test the game on Sony’s consoles. The PlayStation 5 version of Halo: Combat Evolved will take advantage of the DualSense controller, potentially with features exclusive to PlayStation. Testing only on Xbox and PC wouldn’t give a complete picture of how the game runs. Beyond the technical aspects, opening up the Halo Insider program allows Microsoft to involve a larger and more varied group of players in the Halo community.
It might seem odd to see the PlayStation 4 listed on the testing page, considering the new Campaign Evolved won’t be released on that older console. Sony is also starting to discontinue services for the PS4 as it prepares for the next generation of PlayStation, the PS6. Some players think the PS4 is included in the survey simply to gather data, or to hint at a release of an older Halo game like The Master Chief Collection – possibilities that could also apply to the PS5. Both Halo fans and PlayStation users will need to wait for official announcements to find out more.
