Conker's Bad Fur Day Fans Should Keep an Eye on Gori: Cuddly Carnage

Highlights

  • Conker’s Bad Fur Day was a raunchy departure for Rare, known for family-friendly games.
  • Despite being a cult classic, Bad Fur Day was a commercial flop due to niche appeal.
  • Fans of Conker may enjoy Gori: Cuddly Carnage, a violent 3D platformer with adult humor.

As a dedicated fan who grew up with a Nintendo 64 and fond memories of late-night gaming sessions spent with Conker’s Bad Fur Day, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of nostalgia when thinking about the upcoming release of Gori: Cuddly Carnage. It’s been over two decades since we last saw our favorite boozing squirrel, and while a sequel to Conker might be a pipe dream at this point, Gori seems like the perfect spiritual successor for those of us who crave more raunchy, violent 3D platformers with adult humor.

In 2001, Conker’s Bad Fur Day broke new ground by offering something distinct from other games available at the time. This was a departure for Rare, a company renowned for producing high-quality, all-ages games that fit perfectly with Nintendo’s family-oriented image. However, Conker’s Bad Fur Day was far from suitable for children. Instead, it was characterized by its adult humor, intense violence, profanity, and frequent alcohol references. Essentially, Rare flipped the 3D platformer genre on its head with this title, providing a mature gaming experience that was packed with adult-oriented content.

Initially, Conker’s Bad Fur Day didn’t sell well despite becoming a cult favorite later on. This was largely due to its narrow audience appeal, inadequate marketing efforts, and timing, as it was released during the twilight years of the N64. Sadly, Rare hasn’t revisited the Conker universe after the release of Bad Fur Day. Since more than two decades have passed since the original game’s debut, it appears highly unlikely that Microsoft will give the green light for a sequel to the beloved 3D platformer. However, Conker fans do have something to be excited about, as there’s an upcoming game, Gori: Cuddly Carnage, that could serve as a spiritual successor to the franchise.

Why Conker’s Bad Fur Day Fans Should Check Out Gori: Cuddly Carnage

Gori: Cuddly Carnage is a 3D Platformer With a Gory Twist

Developed independently by Angry Demon Studio (Sweden) and published by Wired Productions, the upcoming game titled “Gori: Cuddly Carnage” is a hack-and-slash platformer with a humorous and violent cartoon aesthetic reminiscent of Conker. The story follows Gori, a synthetic cat, his sentient hoverboard F.R.A.N.K., and the grumpy AI CH1-P as they navigate a cyberpunk world devastated by evil toys known as ‘Ultra Pets.’ These mechanical creatures have exterminated humanity, and it’s their mission to prevent these Ultra Pets from conquering the galaxy and eliminating the last human alive on Earth, Professor Y.

Despite its adorable title character and cuddly adversaries, Gori: Cuddly Carnage is definitely not suitable for children. As the name implies, this action game is packed with intense violence and gore. Players will find themselves battling through swarms of bloodthirsty, mutated ‘Ultra Pets,’ dismembering them with a variety of weapons like swords and explosives. Additionally, the game includes mature humor, strong language, high-speed hoverboard parkour sequences, and a mix of music genres as per the creators.

Gori: Cuddly Carnage Could Be Just What Conker Fans Are Looking For

In a different take, Gori: Cuddly Carnage might not mirror exactly the gameplay and setting of the famous Rare title, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, but as an adult-themed 3D platformer with anthropomorphic characters, it could be seen as the closest equivalent to a sequel for now. Fortunately, Gori: Cuddly Carnage is nearing its release date and will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms (Steam, GoG, and Epic Games Store) on August 29, 2024.
