Black Clover: How Asta and Yuno Parallel Each Other

Highlights

  • Asta and Yuno, both orphans, took different paths due to their magic abilities and royal bloodline distinctions.
  • Yuno, favored by mana and royalty, easily gains power, while Asta, with anti-magic abilities, struggles and trains hard.
  • Yuno’s spirit magic with Bell contrasts with Asta’s anti-magic devil, showcasing their different paths to becoming Wizard King.

As a long-time fan of Black Clover, I can’t help but marvel at the intricate differences between Asta and Yuno, our two protagonists. While both strive to become the next Wizard King, their paths couldn’t be more different.

In the world of Black Clover, Asta and Yuno were raised similarly, but as they grow older, significant disparities in their ancestry may slow or speed up their journey towards becoming the next Wizard King. Yuno is endowed with mana, possessing two grimoires with distinct magical abilities and a spirit that controls elements, providing him a notable edge.

While Asta relies on physical training to offset his mana deficiency and excel in close combat situations, this contrasts sharply with his rival’s approach as they both journey towards the title of Wizard King. However, despite their different methods, there are intriguing similarities in their paths that make for an engaging parallel.

Asta and Yuno share several similarities on their journey to becoming the strongest wizard in the Clover Kingdom, aiming for the title of Wizard King. Interestingly, they were both left as infants at the Hage Church Orphanage in the desolate land known as the Forsaken Realm.

Growing up in a poverty-stricken land, these two foster brothers viewed each other as both rivals and friends, striving to become the future Wizard King. However, fate had dealt Asta an unfair hand, as he was born without any magical abilities, whereas Yuno naturally possessed extraordinary magic powers from his youth. Regardless of this significant disadvantage, they relentlessly pursued their ambition, determined to reach the pinnacle of their shared goal.

As a seasoned fan of shounen manga, I have seen countless stories where the protagonists face seemingly insurmountable odds and overcome them through sheer determination and the power of friendship. However, what sets “Black Clover” apart for me is its unique blend of familiar tropes with fresh twists that keep me on my toes.

It was noted earlier that Yuno belongs to the Spade Kingdom’s noble Grinberryall family. This fact clarifies why he can perform such extraordinary magical feats, as those born into royalty in the world of Black Clover possess vast amounts of mana and strong magic powers, while commoners generally have weaker abilities.

As a former commoner who rose through the ranks to become one of the strongest wizards in the Clover Kingdom, I can certainly appreciate the ambitions and dreams of both Asta and Yuno as they strive to become the next Wizard King. However, while I understand that Yuno is set to inherit the throne in the Spade Kingdom as the next King, I cannot help but feel a sense of awe at the extraordinary path that Asta has taken to reach his goal.

In my opinion, Asta and Yuno’s journeys couldn’t be more distinct. I’m constantly amazed by how Asta strives tirelessly to earn everything he has. The series never fails to depict him training rigorously, whether it’s alongside the Magic Knights or on his own. He’s always proving himself and demonstrating his dependability to others through sheer effort.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always been struck by the striking contrast between Asta and Yuno. Yuno, from the get-go, has demonstrated extraordinary magical prowess. His mastery of wind magic, evident in his powerful gusts, is just one example. But what truly sets him apart is the wind elemental spirit he named Bell, a formidable ally indeed.

To put it in my own words as a fan, I’ve got to say that unlike Yuno, who’s blessed with magic, I, Asta, am still devoid of any magical powers. However, the unique Anti-Magic residing within me, bestowed by Liebe dwelling in my Five-Leaf clover grimoire, sets me apart. Although I don’t possess intricate magic spells, I continually acquire new Anti-Magic swords, each with its distinct functions. This situation highlights the contrast between Yuno, adored by mana, and myself, Asta, who seems to be overlooked by it.

As a gamer immersed in this magical world, I’ve come to appreciate Spirit Magic – a unique form of sorcery that only a select few can wield. To harness its power, one must summon an elemental spirit and leverage their extraordinary abilities. But here’s the catch: these spirits are choosy about who they bestow their power upon, preferring those deemed worthy.

Previously stated, Yuno formed an agreement with the wind spirit named Bell, who keeps track of Yuno’s magical powers and detects his hidden abilities. On the other hand, Asta wasn’t aware that a devil lived within his magic book. While Asta could effortlessly employ his Anti-Magic, Yuno got Bell’s scroll in Episode 18 of the anime, and Asta frequently negotiates with Liebe to acquire more power.

The difference is that Bell or Sylph eagerly wanted a contract with Yuno after their first meeting. Although Asta had Anti-Magic abilities, this power was still out of his grasp. It was only in Episode 170 that Asta could gain the full use of Liebe and his Anti-Magic abilities and use Devil Union to fight.

To summarize, Yuno appears privileged with a silver spoon and new magical abilities or grimoires whenever necessary, but he also puts in effort to master them. Conversely, Asta’s story embodies sheer determination, demonstrated by his frequent training sessions when confronting new foes. For instance, in Arc 11, Asta was sent away for additional tutelage in Hino Country to hone his Ki abilities effectively. Despite both aiming to become the next Wizard King, Yuno is endowed with magical power (mana), challenging Asta to exceed his own limits as they follow distinct paths towards their shared goal.

Black Clover is now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
