Some Pokémon cards from the new Mega Dream ex set are already being sold online for high prices—sometimes hundreds of dollars—even though the set hasn’t officially been released yet. This is just the latest example of what many believe is excessive price gouging in the Pokémon card market.
The new Pokemon TCG Mega Dream ex expansion is coming to Japan on November 28th, and fans are really excited! However, some people are already trying to make money by listing cards from the set for sale before the official release, even though it’s not yet known what cards will be inside.
Unreleased Pokemon TCG Cards Are Selling for Hundreds of Dollars
Even though the new Pokemon Trading Card Game set isn’t available for several weeks, the Mega Gengar ex #240 chase card – known as Mega Dream ex – is already selling for high prices on eBay. As of today, multiple listings are available, most starting around $600. Four listings have already been completed at these inflated prices, ranging from $660 (plus over $100 for shipping) to nearly $900. While rare Pokemon TCG cards often sell for a lot, it’s unusual to see such high prices for cards that sellers don’t physically possess yet.
It’s fairly common to see items listed for sale on eBay before they’re even released, but it becomes tricky when the seller doesn’t actually have the item yet. Some sellers are listing the Gengar card assuming they’ll receive it when the new set comes out, suggesting they’ve already bought a lot of booster packs or boxes and are hoping to pull the card. These types of sellers likely contribute to the high demand for Pokémon cards, making it harder for collectors and players to find packs.
As a big fan, I’m really excited about the new set, but I’m curious to see if this huge demand will stay this high once it’s actually released. I’m a little worried the price of the Mega Gengar ex #240 card might drop if tons of them become available all at once. Plus, when the English version comes out – which rumors say will be around early 2026 – it’ll probably change things again, since English cards usually sell for more here in the west. Honestly, I think it might be smart to wait for the official English release instead of risking money on those sketchy pre-release auctions. And thankfully, some stores are trying to stop scalpers, so hopefully we’ll all be able to get the cards we want without having to pay crazy prices!
