Disney+ is creating an anime series based on the video game Death Stranding. Hideo Kojima, the game’s creator, will be an executive producer, and Takayuki Sano, known for his work on anime like Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, will direct the series.
Death Stranding is a brand new game series from Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid, and his studio, Kojima Productions. The post-apocalyptic game, with two installments and another coming in 2025 with ‘On the Beach’, has proven popular with PlayStation players. Its success is thanks to a fantastic cast, including Norman Reedus from ‘The Walking Dead’, and strong visuals and storytelling. Recently, Kojima announced plans to expand the Death Stranding universe with an anime movie and a film produced by A24. Now, it appears another project is underway – a Disney+ series.
Death Stranding Isolations to Stream on Disney+ in 2027
Disney announced a new 2D animated series based on Death Stranding at its APAC Showcase in Hong Kong. Currently titled ‘Death Stranding Isolations’ (the final title may change), the anime is scheduled for release in 2027. The animation will be produced by E&H production, with Jujutsu Kaisen director Sunghoo Park overseeing the project. Takayuki Sano, known for his work on anime like Attack on Titan, Banana Fish, and Promare, will direct. A brief summary of the show was also shared by Deadline and is available below.
Death Stranding Isolations, set in the world of the video game Death Stranding, tells the story of Sam Bridges’ journey to reconnect America and help people cope with loneliness in their own ways.
An elderly man seeks redemption through methods different from those encouraged by Bridges. Meanwhile, a fierce woman attempts to ignite a never-ending war. A young boy harbors resentment towards Bridges, and a girl has accepted her solitude. As the world stands on the brink of destruction, their destinies collide, marking the start of a new chapter in the Death Stranding saga.
Hideo Kojima, the creator and executive producer of the upcoming show, was present at the Disney APAC Showcase. He spoke at the event on behalf of the production team, saying…
I’ve been a huge anime fan since I was a kid, and it’s really influenced how I see the world. I also grew up loving Disney, so I was thrilled when they decided to put my documentary on their platform. When they reached out about working together, it was an easy yes!
It’s not just the new series! An animated film called Death Stranding: Mosquito is also being made by ABC Animations. Currently, it appears Sam Porter Bridges will star in the series, Isolations, rather than the film. We’ll probably find out more about both projects as we get closer to 2026, but the artwork gives us a first look at the film’s title.
