As a long-time fan of both Super Smash Bros. and Kingdom Hearts, I can’t help but feel the excitement brewing at the prospect of these two beloved franchises crossing paths once again. Sora’s inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was a dream come true for many fans, myself included, and it left us yearning for more.

As a devoted admirer of the Super Smash Bros series, I can’t help but wonder about the direction the next installment will take. The resounding success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with its tagline “Everyone Is Here” has certainly set the bar high, and it’s challenging to imagine a sequel eclipsing that unique experience. However, one franchise, in particular, holds immense potential for a comeback, should it decide to reappear.

In the final installment of Super Smash Bros., Sora from Kingdom Hearts became the most recent addition to the game, thanks to the Fighters Pass 2 DLC. His introduction trailer marked a long-awaited arrival for fans, serving simultaneously as a heartfelt farewell to Ultimate. Many had considered it impossible that Sora would ever join Smash Bros., but his inclusion was indeed a reality.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Has Plenty of Potential in the Next Super Smash Bros.

Sora Faced an Uphill Battle Throughout Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In a surprising turn of events, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 was initially considered an improbable addition to Super Smash Bros due to Square Enix’s notoriety for being protective over their characters and intellectual properties. Given the vast reach of Smash, it was believed that the company would be reluctant to participate. However, against all expectations, Cloud made his appearance in Super Smash Bros 4. Remarkably, the following game welcomed three more Square Enix characters: the protagonist from Dragon Quest 11, the villain Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, and of course, Sora.

It was thought that including Sora in the series seemed extremely unlikely due to a couple of factors. Primarily, Kingdom Hearts is a franchise built on combining Final Fantasy characters with Disney worlds. Given Disney’s reputation for tightly guarding its intellectual property, this presented a significant obstacle. However, when it turned out that Sora would indeed be part of the story, it made his inclusion all the more satisfying.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Gives Sora Plenty of Material for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Regardless of the bumpy journey leading up to it, Sora’s presence in Super Smash Bros. continues to be quite remarkable. He boasts an impressive stage and some of the finest costumes within the game. While the soundtrack from Kingdom Hearts might not stand out much in Ultimate, this could be due to complications with another IP, and there’s still room for improvement in a future edition. Most significantly, Kingdom Hearts 4 is already set to offer more content that the next installment of Super Smash Bros. can potentially incorporate.

While Kingdom Hearts 4 hasn’t fully disclosed its plans, there are hints suggesting Sora might reappear in the Super Smash Bros. series. For instance, Kingdom Hearts 3 ended with Sora being separated from his friends yet again and finding himself in a realm called Quadratum. This realm could make an excellent stage for Smash Bros., and this is just one of many intriguing possibilities.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m super hyped about the fresh design for Sora in Kingdom Hearts 4, which feels like it was tailor-made as an additional outfit option. However, it was a bit disappointing to see that Sora’s friends, who he values so deeply, were missing from his debut in Ultimate. Now, I know it might seem odd or even impossible for Donald and Goofy to join the fray, but let’s not rule out possibilities. Given that Kingdom Hearts 4 will probably introduce a host of new original characters, there’s a chance one (or more) of them could team up with Sora in future Smash Bros adventures.

While official details about Kingdom Hearts 5 and the next Super Smash Bros. game remain scarce, fans’ anticipation is at an all-time high. The possibilities of characters from both series merging are more promising than ever. The innovative designs and ideas presented in Kingdom Hearts 5 could seamlessly fit into a Super Smash Bros. roster. Sora’s appearance in Ultimate was a powerful concluding note, making it sensible for its successor to build upon this momentum.
