The idea of RDJ stepping into the shoes of one of Marvel’s most iconic villains is nothing short of intriguing, but the prospect of him portraying an evil Stark Variant raises several questions.
The news about Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom in upcoming MCU films, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, has sparked a lot of excitement and diverse opinions among fans. New developments hint at a more definitive glimpse into the new interpretation of this iconic Marvel Comics antagonist for viewers.
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, one of the most surprising and contentious revelations came from Marvel Studios during their Hall H presentation: Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but in a different role than Tony Stark. Contrary to recent rumors suggesting RDJ might play an evil version of Stark, he will instead be debuting as a completely new character. Marvel officially unveiled RDJ as Victor Von Doom, strongly hinting that he’ll be assuming the role of the iconic villain.
While specifics about Avengers: Doomsday are still under wraps, industry insider Daniel Richtman may have offered some insights into the background of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. According to Richtman, Doctor Doom could originate from the same alternate universe as Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. If this is accurate, it suggests that Downey’s character might be a variant of Tony Stark rather than an entirely new villain in the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. In other words, he could be a version of Iron Man instead of an entirely separate character unrelated to the Armored Avenger.
If the given information is correct, it implies that Downey might depict Doctor Doom as a more compassionate antagonist in his debut, a role he has embodied in the comics. The storyline of Marvel’s 2015 Secret Wars miniseries could have influenced this character development. The Secret Wars comic book series is well-known for its epic battle on a planet called Battleworld, where Doctor Doom plays a significant role, having constructed Battleworld, a realm where multiple universes intersect. Surprisingly, though, many didn’t expect Marvel Studios to bring back an actor like Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. As we wait to see how this develops, it’s worth noting that The Fantastic Four: First Steps takes place in a different universe, so Downey’s Doctor Doom is presumably from there and not the primary MCU timeline. This could mean that Downey’s portrayal of Doom may be an evil counterpart to Tony Stark or possibly just share a resemblance without any direct link. To put it simply, it’s more reasonable to imagine Downey playing a Stark Variant rather than a different character entirely in the upcoming film, given his strong association with Iron Man. Fans suggest that if Doom keeps his mask on throughout the movie, Downey could be skillfully disguised to such an extent that viewers wouldn’t recognize him. However, this raises a question: why would Marvel make such a big deal about Downey’s involvement if we never see his face? Additionally, this approach leaves open the possibility for another Doom variant to appear in future productions if needed. In the past, Julian McMahon and Toby Kebbell have portrayed Doctor Doom in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie and the 2015 reboot respectively.
The epic movies titled “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” will grace the silver screen on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively.
