The prospect of seeing not one, but two versions of Sauron is simply mind-boggling! It’s like having a double scoop of Mordor’s finest evil ice cream, and I can hardly wait!
In a short while, we’ll be diving into season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” and a recent sneak peek promises a surprising twist: instead of just one antagonist, fans will encounter two forms of the malevolent figure known as Sauron.
The Amazon Prime Video fantasy show predominantly explores the second era of Middle-Earth where Sauron resumed dominion. In the initial season, we gradually discovered the towering figure’s true nature and aims. Interestingly, Sauron is renowned for disguising himself to trick others and further his agendas. Notably, a recent sneak peek from Prime Video indicates that season of The Rings of Power will showcase not just one, but two distinct manifestations of the ominous character.
In the behind-the-scenes segment, viewers are given insights into what season 2 of “The Rings of Power” will delve into, particularly focusing on various aspects of Sauron, and how his character transforms. Actor Charlie Vickers, who portrayed Sauron in the previous season, explains that his character has shape-shifting abilities. Later in the clip, Vickers discloses that a new actor, Jack Lowden, will be taking over as Sauron for the opening scene of the next installment. The featurette also unveils that Lowden will be portraying a different manifestation of the antagonist in season 2. Furthermore, Vickers mentions his involvement in a flashback sequence set “a millennium before” the first season. Meanwhile, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay hint that Sauron will be revealed more openly this time around, allowing audiences to recognize him.
Lowden being the face of Sauron a thousand years ago explains why Adar didn’t recognize him as Halbrand in the first season. This is one of the many aspects that shows why Sauron is such a menacing villain and poses a greater threat to Middle Earth. Fans already saw how he managed to outclass Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) in season one, despite her being very knowledgeable and experienced. Additionally, fans might feel anxious about Sauron, disguised as Annatar, conversing with Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur) in the new featurette. Though Durin is a formidable warrior, it’s uncertain how he’ll withstand Sauron’s cunning words. The trailers of The Rings of Power season 2 have already made it clear that the team of heroes would have to witness a lot of death this time around. This season will be more focused on how Sauron and his evil allies will continue to pose more and more dangers to everyone living in Middle Earth.
In addition to two characters portrayed by Sauron, the upcoming season will also introduce viewers to Tom Bombadil, an enigmatic and immensely powerful figure from J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythos. Actor Rory Kinnear brings this character to life for the first time in a live-action version of The Lord of the Rings. It will be intriguing to see how the creators delve into Bombadil’s origins and why he is regarded as the most powerful being in Middle Earth.
