New Report Reveals Why Crash Bandicoot 5 Was Canceled

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, it’s always disheartening to see beloved franchises like Crash Bandicoot struggle. I remember the thrill of the original trilogy, the nostalgia of the remakes, and the excitement that Crash 4 brought back into our lives. The cancellation of Crash Bandicoot 5 feels like a punch in the gut, especially when we thought the series was finally finding its footing again.

It has been reported that the production of Toys For Bob’s “Crash Bandicoot 5” was allegedly scrapped because Activision asked the studio to prioritize live-service games instead. Fans of Crash Bandicoot were disappointed earlier this year when a former team member, who worked on “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time,” shared that there had been plans for a “Crash 5,” but it ultimately got shelved secretly.

Over the past two decades, the Crash Bandicoot series has faced numerous challenges. A rocky phase of subpar games during the mid-2000s and early 2010s was followed by the Crash Bandicoot remake trilogy and Crash 4, which were widely regarded as a comeback for the franchise. Critics particularly appreciated Crash 4’s storyline and the revitalization of the classic platforming gameplay. However, following its release, the series failed to regain traction after Crash Team Rumble. In February 2024, Toys For Bob parted ways with Activision, which was later followed by the announcement that Activision had canceled Crash 5. Recent reports have shed light on the reasons behind the cancellation of Crash 5.

In a recent video by DidYouKnowGaming and Liam Robertson, it was disclosed that the development of Crash Bandicoot 5 was abandoned during its early stages. This decision was reportedly due to sales of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time being considered disappointing by Activision. Despite Crash 4 selling over five million units and being financially successful, these numbers were not satisfying enough for Activision, causing the cancellation of Crash 5. Subsequently, Toys For Bob was reassigned to work on their live service titles such as Overwatch 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone. The abandoned Crash 5 project was later transformed into a live service title utilizing assets from Crash 4, known as Crash Team Rumble.

Crash 5’s Canceled Concepts

In this video, they discussed the idea for the canceled game “Crash 5,” which would have been a continuation from “Crash 4.” Concept sketches and story outlines suggested that the sequel would delve back into the Academy of Evil from “Crash Twinsanity” as its primary location. The villains N. Bryo, Dr. Cortex, Pinstripe, and Tiny Tiger were among those expected to return, with the concept involving Crash exploring the minds of these characters.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve always dreamt about the epic crossover potential between two iconic characters – Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. It was Uka Uka who orchestrated this ambitious plan initially, setting the stage for an exciting collaboration that eventually formed the core of Crash 5. The game concept featured intriguing possibilities such as playing both characters simultaneously or embarking on a multiversal adventure separately.
