Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht Praises AI in Latest Tweet: Details

As a seasoned crypto investor and tech enthusiast, I find myself both captivated and concerned by the recent developments in AI technology, as evidenced by Ross Ulbricht’s tweet from prison and Elon Musk’s call for regulation on X social media platform.

In prison, renowned creator of the deep web’s Silk Road marketplace, Ross Ulbricht, recently posted a tweet discussing advanced AI technology.

Ulbricht is currently serving over eleven years behind bars, having been apprehended in 2013 when authorities closed down the online marketplace known as Silk Road.

Ulbricht praises AI tech

The creator of the Silk Road shared excitement over a recent article detailing AI software generating images based on thoughts. He noted with approval how technology has significantly progressed since his imprisonment.

Wow, just came across an interesting piece detailing the ability of AI to generate images from people’s mental imagery. Incredible advancement in technology, isn’t it?

As a researcher, it appears plausible that Ulbricht might have alluded to an article I came across last year, titled “Researchers Use AI to Generate Images Based on People’s Brain Activity.” This piece discusses an intriguing development in the field where researchers are conducting experiments involving AI to recreate high-resolution and highly accurate images directly from brain activity, leveraging the widely-used Stable Diffusion image generation model.

According to their statement, there was no requirement for them to teach or adjust the AI systems before they could generate those pictures on their own.

Elon Musk calls for AI safety bill in California

Today, Elon Musk took to the X social media platform to make an important AI call.

Elon Musk expressed his opinion that California state needs to approve SB 1047, an AI safety bill. As a long-time advocate for AI regulation, the founder of xAI emphasized that such development should be governed by authorities, similar to how they manage any technology or product that could pose a risk to the public.

As someone who has dedicated over two decades to advocating for AI regulation, much like we do with other potentially risky products and technologies, I firmly believe that California should move forward in passing the SB 1047 AI safety bill. While I understand this decision may not please everyone, given the complexity and potential impact of AI technology, it’s a necessary step to ensure safety and accountability in our digital landscape.

This bill authored by State Senator Scott Wiener would be the first bill that, if passed, would require AI creating companies to test their large-scale AI models for safety before releasing them. In response, large AI companies threatened to leave the California state should the bill be passed.

Companies responsible for developing AI models with a value exceeding $100 million will need to mitigate any substantial risks detected during safety assessments by implementing suitable precautions.

AI developers will likewise need to devise a “safety blueprint” outlining strategies for managing potential risks. They should keep this blueprint on file while their model remains active, and for an additional period of five years.
