James Gunn Sets The Stage For One Justice League Member to Join the DCU With New Social Media Tease

It seems that James Gunn has plans to introduce a new version of Superman in his upcoming movie, set for release on July 11, 2025. As for the Martian Manhunter, fans are still some ways off from seeing the character on screen again, but there’s hope that Gunn can recreate his Guardians of the Galaxy success for Creature Commandos in the meantime, as that animated series is technically the first project from his new DCU and could have a real impact on how the franchise is perceived going into Superman in 2025. The start of the DCU remains to be seen, but there’s at least one green light on the horizon.

James Gunn’s new DC Universe is preparing for its debut with the launch of Superman, and the director of the film hinted on social media that another extraterrestrial character could potentially join the team soon

In your own words: The DCU, or the DC Extended Universe, is intended to rise from the ashes of the DCEU, a shared universe that Zack Snyder reimagined against the MCU, with decreasing returns over time. Led by new DC Studios chiefs Gunn and Peter Safran, the rebooted franchise has been carefully planned, starting its run with a slate of projects collectively titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The most prominent of these planned projects is Superman, which is set to establish the tone and stakes of the franchise, as well as introduce many important characters in future events, not least of all the titular hero. The film has already wrapped up filming, and even features a very significant Superman cameo that fans will appreciate

It’s become evident since the beginning that Gunn’s version of Superman is creating a unique Justice League compared to the team in the DCEU, and a recent DC Easter egg from Gunn might hint at a strong new member for this group. On his official account on X, Gunn shared an image of a large pack of chocolate sandwich cookies branded as Chocos, resembling popular Oreo cookies. This post has sparked immense excitement among fans, as Chocos are not a real product but instead the in-universe version of Oreos and the preferred Earth snack of J’onn J’onzz, also known as the Martian Manhunter

As a devoted DC Comics fan and gamer, I’ve always been intrigued by the Martian Manhunter’s unique backstory. In the comics, I discovered that his fondness for Chocos is more than just a casual snack preference; it’s become an integral part of his lore. Shazam shared some with him once, and from there, my love for these treats grew

Gunn has been pretty liberal with the social media easter eggs, and there’s little reason to believe that this instance is a coincidence. Whether as a prominent character in Justice League Unlimited or as a surprise DLC entrant in the first Injustice video game, J’onn J’onzz has been intermittently popular with casual comic book fans for decades, but has never seen a true push to the mainstream like many other DC heroes have. The last attempt at this was in Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, a director’s cut that only really appealed to established fans and showed the character in a passing role. Getting J’onn in on th4e ground floor of the rebooted DCU could be a game changer for the character, as well as a nuclear storytelling option due to his impressive (and often understated) power.

Although it may take some time before Martian Manhunter appears again on screen, there’s optimism that James Gunn can replicate his success with Guardians of the Galaxy in the interim through Creature Commandos, an upcoming animated series. This project marks the initial venture for Gunn under his new DCU, and it could significantly influence the future perception of the franchise as we approach Superman in 2025. The initial phase of the DCU under Gunn’s leadership and its impact on current plans for the franchise remains to be seen, but at least there’s a promising sign ahead

Superman is currently set for theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
