As a researcher who has closely followed the evolution of social media platforms over the past decade, I must admit that I am both intrigued and concerned by the recent developments at Telegram. Having witnessed the rise of this privacy-focused platform and its commitment to user autonomy, it’s disheartening to see it seemingly taking a step towards becoming another Facebook or Instagram.
Once more, Telegram, a widely-used social media service renowned for its focus on user privacy, finds itself at the center of attention following the recent arrest of its CEO. This platform prides itself on maintaining a minimal interference in users’ activities, which has attracted over 950 million people to use it solely for this feature. At one time, Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, left Russia with the aim of creating a secure and private communication channel. However, recent developments suggest that the platform may be moving towards resembling other social media platforms like Facebook, which are often criticized for their lax approach to user privacy. This shift underscores the fact that no platform is exempt from legal scrutiny.
For more than ten years, Telegram has been dedicated to creating robust privacy measures for its users. Features such as disappearing messages and secure private conversations have drawn in numerous users who prefer privacy to constant monitoring by platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and others.
Durov’s Arrest Became The Turning Point In Telegram’s Policy
On most social media sites, there have been issues regarding privacy scandals, which have caused users to lose faith in these platforms. Yet, Durov’s platform has consistently stood apart from this. Nevertheless, due to a recent change in their policy concerning illegal content, genuine concerns are being raised among the user base.
23 hours ago, CEO Pavel Durov publicly emerged following his arrest, issuing a statement regarding his detention in France. The billionaire businessman described his arrest as “misguided,” suggesting that French government officials could have contacted his company for communication instead of taking drastic measures. This clarifies any uncertainty about Durov’s current legal situation. Notably, the price of Toncoin has risen significantly since the statement was made.
As a dedicated researcher, I’m deeply engaged in unraveling the events unfolding in France. I recognize and share the concerns that have been voiced. In light of this, my personal commitment is to safeguard the future of our extensive user base, numbering over 950 million, by ensuring Telegram’s platform remains free from those who might misuse it.

In my latest musings, I’ve been pondering over the question of creator’s responsibilities, specifically regarding instances where their works are misused by others.
Constructing technology poses a significant challenge, and no inventor would create novel instruments if they feared personal accountability for misuse of those tools.
Primarily, Pavel unveiled a preliminary look at the future privacy policy strategies for the network he’s working on. He disclosed that they have been focusing on eliminating illicit content, but now their efforts will be directed inward to address this issue comprehensively. This action was significant because of Pavel Durov’s past arrest, which stemmed from his inability to prevent the dissemination of illegal activities such as child exploitation, drug trafficking, and other unlawful transactions.
The new policy regarding reporting illegal content in private conversations is now active as the platform has issued guidelines for this purpose. Previously, the platform stated that personal chats and bot interactions were out of bounds, but they have since provided a detailed process for flagging any illegal activities occurring on their platform.
Is Telegram The New Facebook?
For years, Facebook has faced criticism globally due to insufficient user protection and intrusive data handling policies. While it has cooperated with government regulations and granted users the ability to report illegal content, it is also notorious for interfering in users’ personal matters. Remarkably, Telegram’s recent policy change appears to be a step towards similar practices, suggesting that future developments might involve moderation and potential misuse of user data.
On the other hand, this move can be seen as an initial effort in dealing with unlawful content to ensure a secure environment. Yet, some critics argue that it marks the start of content moderation, potentially infringing upon the fundamental principles of the platform.
Despite some uncertainty about CEO Pavel Durov’s plans, it seems we may see more changes like this one. The recent policy adjustment, while modest, could potentially grow into something larger down the line.
