Pokémon Legends: Z-A brings back many Pokémon from the Mega Dimension, and some evolve in special ways. Hisuian Qwilfish is one of these – evolving it into Overqwil requires a specific process.
Both Qwilfish forms are included in the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but only the Hisuian form can evolve into Overqwil. This evolution doesn’t happen through typical methods like leveling up, using an item, or increasing friendship. Instead, it requires a special, unique process.

How to Evolve Hisuain Qwilfish Into Overqwil

In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Qwilfish evolves into Overqwil in a special way. It needs to use the move Barb Barrage 20 times before it will evolve.
The way Pokémon evolve in this game is similar to how it worked in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, where Hisuian Qwilfish first appeared. However, there’s a key difference: you don’t need to consider Strong or Agile Styles during battles. This simplifies the process, meaning you only need to use the correct move to trigger evolution and don’t have to worry about much else.
Hisuian Qwilfish won’t evolve simply by knowing the move Barb Barrage. It needs to learn the move and actually use it in battle 20 times.
Luckily, evolving Hisuian Qwilfish into Overqwil is pretty simple. You don’t need to actually fight battles – just use Barb Barrage to break Mega Crystals in both Lumiose City and Hyperspace Lumiose, and that progress will count towards the evolution. This makes it quick and easy to get your Overqwil without endless battling.
For a faster approach, visit the Justice Dojo in Lumiose City and repeatedly attack the mannequins. Unlike other objects, they won’t break when hit, so you can target them over and over.
As a big Pokémon fan, I always make sure people know that the Qwilfish from the Hisui region is the only one that can evolve into Overqwil! The regular Qwilfish you find in Johto just doesn’t get an evolution. If you’re ever confused about which one is which, just look for the purple details – the Hisuain Qwilfish has really noticeable purple markings that make it easy to spot.
If you could add any Pokémon to the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A DLC, what would they be? Share your ideas and discuss them with other fans on the TopMob Discord server!
