As a gamer who has been following Star Wars since its inception, I can honestly say that the loss of Star Wars 1313 still haunts me like the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The promise of a mature, gritty bounty hunter adventure set in the heart of Coruscant’s criminal underworld was nothing short of tantalizing. But alas, like the Millennium Falcon without Han Solo at the helm, it never got off the ground.
In 2012 when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, there was much uncertainty about what it would bring to the Star Wars franchise, as it had been largely inactive beyond The Clone Wars series, EU novels, and a few video games. However, this acquisition sparked anticipation for more from the franchise. While fans have seen a range of projects since then, some titles like Star Wars 1313 were put on hold. Yet, there’s hope that Star Wars Outlaws will fulfill that promise.
Star Wars 1313, unlike any previous Star Wars project, intended to explore the criminal underbelly of the galaxy. Regrettably, this concept never came to fruition when Disney closed LucasArts and halted all development. Yet, while Star Wars Outlaws might not reach the mature depths that Star Wars 1313 promised, it still offers a comparable experience. And it may be the most fans will ever encounter of this eagerly awaited adventure.
Star Wars Outlaws Seems to Deliver On Star Wars 1313’s Promise
Star Wars 1313 Will Forever Be Missed
At E3 2012, Star Wars 1313 was initially revealed, generating immense excitement as one of the most awaited Star Wars productions. Unlike other projects, it was set to have George Lucas’s personal touch and would forgo lightsabers and the Force, instead focusing on a narrative about bounty hunters. The studio aimed to present a darker, more adult-oriented interpretation of the Star Wars universe, something that had not been explored before or after.
In essence, the storyline of Star Wars 1313 was still under wraps, but the game’s intended focus was on a young Boba Fett and his life on Level 1313 of Coruscant. A brief glimpse revealed him battling through a sinking spacecraft, plunging into the planet’s core. The narrative could have unfolded to reveal Boba’s story and the criminal organizations that thrived in Coruscant, while also providing insights into the galaxy as a whole. However, by 2024, the idea had become dormant, leaving it uncertain whether it would ever be revived again.
Star Wars Outlaws Has Given Fans a Slice of That Experience
Despite Star Wars 1313 not making its way to audiences, Star Wars Outlaws appears to be fulfilling some of the promises LucasArts had made. Instead of focusing on Boba Fett, Massive Entertainment has created a narrative revolving around Kay Vess, a scoundrel, as she battles criminal organizations dwelling in the Outer Rim. The story pits her against groups such as the Pykes, Crimson Dawn, Hutts, and Ashiga Clan. Like Star Wars 1313, she takes on these adversaries armed only with a blaster.
In contrast to the intended grittiness and maturity of Star Wars 1313, Star Wars Outlaws appears to be revealing the more sinister aspects of the galaxy. Players are offered a glimpse into parts seldom explored in the movies, resulting in an unprecedented Star Wars gaming experience. Moreover, the open-world planets created by the studio have been successful in drawing players deep into this adventure, making them yearn for more.
Although it’s uncertain whether Star Wars 1313 will be revived, there’s currently Star Wars Outlaws for those seeking a comparable narrative experience. If this game thrives, expect more tales of the underworld in the Star Wars universe, with one potentially adopting a mature approach. However, even if that doesn’t materialize, at least criminal organizations are now getting their moment in the spotlight within the Star Wars franchise.
