Hollow Knight, the popular indie Metroidvania game from 2017, is coming to the new Nintendo Switch 2. The developers, Team Cherry, also announced a free expansion for the highly anticipated sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Hollow Knight, initially funded through Kickstarter and released in 2017, quickly became a beloved indie hit. Players take on the role of a silent knight, battling challenging bosses and venturing through the insect-ridden kingdom of Hallownest. Praised for its stunning art style and demanding gameplay, it’s considered one of the most successful independent games of the last decade. Its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, launched in 2025 to critical acclaim and numerous awards, including several Game of the Year nominations. Now, Team Cherry is bringing both games to the new Nintendo Switch 2 console.
Hollow Knight: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Announced, Free Upgrade for Nintendo Switch Owners
Team Cherry announced on their blog that they’re developing a version of Hollow Knight for the Nintendo Switch 2. This new version will include improvements like smoother gameplay with higher frame rates and resolutions, plus updated graphics. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, it’s currently planned for sometime in 2026. You can find screenshots of the game on their blog and above.
Anyone who owns Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch will get the Nintendo Switch 2 version at no cost. Around the time the new console launches, an update with new features and bug fixes will also be available for existing Switch players. This announcement follows the reveal of a new expansion for Hollow Knight: Silksong, called Sea of Sorrow. Both the upgraded Switch version and the Silksong expansion are scheduled to release in 2026.
Hollow Knight first launched on the Nintendo Switch in June 2018, ahead of its release on PlayStation and Xbox. What began as planned downloadable content for the original game eventually evolved into a standalone sequel, Silksong. Now, players will be able to experience both Hollow Knight and Silksong on the new Nintendo Switch 2, with enhanced features and free additional content.
