PlayStation announces PS5 Pro, as well as price and date

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro has sent a thrill down my spine. The tech-savvy part of me is excited about the upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing, and AI-driven upscaling. The gamer in me can’t wait to see how these enhancements will breathe new life into games like Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

In a nine-minute broadcast, Mark Cerny from Sony unveiled details about the PlayStation 5 Pro, explaining its features.

For a while now, there’s been talk that something was up, but on the 9th of September, Sid Shuman (a high-ranking member at Sony Interactive Entertainment) published a blog post hinting at “A PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation led by Mark Cerny”. However, this announcement doesn’t seem to be revealing everything that many people were expecting.

Prepare to attend a live-streamed event led by Mark Cerny, the Chief Architect of the PlayStation 5 console. This 9-minute technical presentation will delve into the PS5 and the latest advancements in gaming technology. The countdown trailer hints that this is just another step forward on our ongoing journey.

The big one then: the PS5 Pro will cost £699 ($699.99) and is coming on November 7th, 2024. The “vertical stand” is sold separately. The console will include a 2TB SSD and a copy of Astro’s Playroom.

Cerny clarified that developers expressed a need for additional choices, and he outlined the three main areas for enhancement as follows:

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

One method of rephrasing: Additional upgrades come with the PS5 Pro Game Boost, benefiting over 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on the PS5 Pro console. This feature can help maintain or boost performance for compatible PS4 and PS5 titles. Enhanced visual quality for PS4 games is also accessible to enhance resolution on specific PS4 games. The PS5 Pro will be equipped with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in regions that support this standard. Additionally, it supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and 8K gaming.

It’s truly awe-inspiring to witness game developers adapting the innovative technology from the PS5 Pro. Many games will receive complimentary software updates, allowing players to experience the unique features of the PS5 Pro. These games will be marked with a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label in their titles. Some exciting games to anticipate include blockbuster hits from PlayStation Studios and our collaborative partners such as Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.

It seems that both new and previously released games will receive support. A demonstration of The Last of Us Part 2 ran on a PS5 Pro, showcasing visuals similar to high-definition but with the performance mode’s faster frame rates.

According to Cerny, the PS5 Pro delivers “more defined” and “clearer” visuals, as demonstrated in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The primary highlights appear to be enhanced clarity and smoother, more responsive gameplay.

Cerny stated, “This console is our most potent creation yet,” and went on to detail how a game like Horizon Forbidden West can boast enhanced lighting effects due to the PS5 Pro’s might. Ray Tracing was highlighted as a significant advancement, with Gran Turismo 7 leveraging this technology while preserving its frame rate.

PS5 Pro is launching on November 7th with pre-orders starting September 26th, 2024.
