Players of the game Phasmophobia are having a lot of fun with a new ghost that shares a similar name to former U.S. President Barack Obama. The amusing coincidence has quickly become a popular meme across the game’s online communities.
A new ghost named Obambo has been added to the game Phasmophobia with the latest update, Winter’s Jest. This update, version 0.15.1.0, was released on December 16th and also starts the game’s 2025 holiday event.
Phasmophobia’s Obambo Ghost Nicknamed ‘Obama’ by Fans
Almost immediately after the latest Phasmophobia update was released, players started calling the new ghost “Obama.” The update included a holiday event, which likely boosted the joke’s popularity, as many people logged in to play and quickly shared stories about hunting “Obama.” The joke quickly spread online and has already been used in popular memes, including the classic “thanks, Obama” format.
Some Players Are Amused ‘Obama’ Debuted in Phasmophobia Before Specter
A recent meme on the popular Phasmophobia subreddit highlighted the humor in the game receiving a Barack Obama-themed update before adding the long-requested “Specter” ghost type. Fans have been asking for Specter for years, even creating detailed ideas for how it could work in the game. While the developers haven’t officially said they’re considering it, adding Specter could create translation issues, as the game’s Wraith ghost is already called “Specter” in some languages.
Phasmophobia Just Hit Its Record Steam Player Count for December 2025
Honestly, that Obama meme really blew up the launch of patch 0.15.1.0! We hit a crazy peak of over 36,000 players on Steam, which is the most we’ve seen all month. Looking at the numbers from SteamDB on December 17th, Phasmophobia is now the 39th most played game on Steam, and it’s also selling really well – it’s the 45th best-selling game right now!
Serious Player Reactions to Phasmophobia’s ‘Obama’ Ghost Are Mixed
Putting aside the jokes, players have had varying reactions to the new ghost, Obambo. Some appreciate its spooky design, while others find its unpredictable behavior – switching quickly between calm and active phases – makes its hunts feel jarring. A common complaint isn’t about the ghost itself, but the in-game journal. It focuses more on story details than clear instructions on how to identify Obambo, and this problem also affects the other two new ghosts, Gallu and Dayan. Consequently, figuring out these three new ghost types in Phasmophobia without looking online can be really frustrating, and will likely stay that way until the developers add better clues or players learn the common evidence combinations.
What’s Next for Phasmophobia in its Post-Obama Era
The latest update, version 0.15.1.0, is expected to be the last major content addition to Phasmophobia in 2025. However, the developers at Kinetic Games are already planning significant changes for 2026, including a substantial update called Horror 2.0. This update is planned to launch alongside the full release of the game, ending its five-year early access period. Horror 2.0 will overhaul the game’s core mechanics, adding new ghost behaviors and ways to interact with them. Beyond that, Kinetic is also creating new maps and seasonal events. Finally, Phasmophobia is coming to the Switch 2 in 2026, and the Switch version will include all the same content as the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox versions.
