As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in the financial industry, I’ve seen my fair share of security breaches and cyberattacks. The recent incident at Indodax, the Indonesian exchange with more than 5 million users, is yet another reminder that the crypto world is not immune to such threats.
As reported by blockchain safety company SlowMist, it appears that Indodax – the oldest and most significant cryptocurrency exchange in Indonesia with over 5 million users – has experienced a security incident.
The hacker behind the attack stole a total of $22 million worth of crypto.
Significantly, Shiba Inu (SHIB), one of the most popular meme-based cryptocurrencies and the second largest in its category, was impacted by a theft. A malicious entity made off with approximately 9 billion SHIB coins.
Chainlink (INK), Tron (TRX), and Ethereum (ETH) are among the other affected tokens.
Bitcoin, being the biggest cryptocurrency, is also responsible for a significant share of the money that gets stolen from digital wallets or exchanges.
To provide an update, the infamous WarizX hacker, known for swiping approximately $100 million in SHIB tokens, has resurfaced. It is reported that within a span of eight days, this individual laundered over $30 million in Ethereum (ETH), as per data shared by analytics platform Spot on Chain.
