Why Halo 7 Needs to Bring Back One Forgotten Halo 5 Faction

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the grinder with the Master Chief since the days of Combat Evolved, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about the Prometheans. These metallic warriors were once a formidable foe, their disintegrating Incineration Cannons a constant threat to my Spartan shields. But alas, they’ve been missing in action since Infinite, and it’s time for 343 Industries to bring them back for Halo 7.

From Halo: Combat Evolved to Halo Infinite, the Halo franchise has long been known for its diverse roster and complex mechanics of its enemies. For nearly 23 years, players have enjoyed battling the maneuverable and often comedic Covenant aliens, the robotic Forerunner sentinels, and the chaotic Flood forms. While most of these factions have continued to reappear relatively consistently, one faction has seemingly been abandoned in Halo Infinite: the Prometheans. With the recent publishing of a Halo Waypoint chronicle focusing on the Prometheans, 343 Industries should strive to bring this Warrior-Servant faction back in Halo 7.

Halo’s Promethean Knights Explained

Those who have enjoyed 343’s earlier mainline Halo games, such as Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians, are likely acquainted with the robot-like creatures known as Prometheans. However, their background extends far beyond being mere Forerunner creations. During the era when the Forerunners ruled the galaxy, Prometheans were simple soldiers within the Forerunner society, belonging to the Warrior-Servant caste, frequently deployed in conflicts against ancient humans, Precursors, and San’Shyuum. However, their physical forms proved insufficient against the advancing Flood infection, leading the Didact to create a new type of Promethean soldier.

Employing the Composer device, the teacher-like figure known as the Didact brought back and reanimated his mythical warriors as robotic versions of the Promethean Knights. These metallic soldiers served as a defense mechanism against the Flood, being immune to the infection due to their robotic nature. They were equipped with destructive weapons like the Incineration Cannon that disintegrated Flood tissue. However, despite their best efforts, the Flood’s overwhelming numbers proved too much for the Knights to handle alone. In desperation, the Didact used the Composer again to awaken ancient humans and enlist them in the Promethean forces.

Following the Master Chief’s victory over the Didact, the Promethean Knights subsequently bowed to Jul ‘Mdama, a post-Covenant warlord who served as the Didact’s right hand. Later, they came under the command of Cortana, leader of The Created.

Prometheans’ Potential Return in Halo 7

In the narrative of “Halo Waypoint’s Halo: The Machine Breaks,” we follow Promethean Knight TDS-009, a character whose human memories resurface during battle under Mdama’s command. As it turns out, this Knight is essentially Dr. Sandra Tillson – one of the numerous modern humans created after the Didact retrieved the Composer from Installation 03 in “Halo 4.” Throughout the story, we see that Tillson can disregard her programming and protect human soldiers, despite being trapped within a war machine. Tormented by the presence of her consciousness in a fighting machine, she ultimately breaks free at the end of “The Machine Breaks,” only to be captured and imprisoned on the Forerunner Shield World Genesis, becoming one of monitor 031 Exuberant Witness’ many captive specimens in “Halo 5.

According to Tillson’s account, it seems that more rational human minds might be emerging among the Promethean forces. Since Cortana has been eliminated and The Created have weakened following Halo Infinite, these human Prometheans could possibly rise up against their Created superiors and aim to revert back to their original human form. If these Promethean humans manage to regain autonomy, some of the remaining Knights might join forces with UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios troops in Halo 7, helping to fight off Created, Banished, and Endless forces. The Weapon, who shares a similarity with Cortana as a kind of sister figure, could potentially aid some Prometheans in breaking free from their Warrior-Servant programming.

Prometheans Potential Gameplay in Halo 7

In the event that Prometheans reappear in Halo 7, they could serve to enrich the gameplay experience by introducing fresh and distinct Forerunner weaponry. Instead of the Forerunner weapons resembling human technology as seen in Halo 4 and 5, 343 Industries might opt for the Prometheans to wield novel Forerunner weapons like the Cindershot and Heatwave, as demonstrated in Halo Infinite. Some Prometheans could function as allies akin to the Elites in Halo 3, while others may persist as adversaries intent on human destruction, similar to the Warden Eternal, Guardians, or even new types of Prometheans arising from their dwindling numbers. Minimally, it would be fitting for the Prometheans to make a comeback in another mainline Halo game to provide a satisfying conclusion to their narrative arc.
