Rumors are circulating that LEGO might release SpongeBob-themed sets again in 2026. This idea comes from fans who’ve noticed some recent licensing activity involving Nickelodeon – a pattern that often happens before LEGO announces partnerships with popular brands.
SpongeBob SquarePants first became a LEGO theme in 2006, thanks to a partnership between Nickelodeon and LEGO. They created over a dozen sets, but LEGO stopped making them in 2013. Since then, different companies have made SpongeBob building toys. Mega Bloks had the license in 2014, followed by Kawada in 2020, who used SpongeBob characters with their tiny Nanoblock kits. Most recently, in late 2023, AREA-X released its own line of SpongeBob products, with plans to launch 27 different items over the next two years.
AREA-X Bricks Discontinuing Its Licensed SpongeBob Line
AREA-X has announced it will stop selling all products featuring SpongeBob at the end of 2025. This isn’t simply a matter of stopping production; they’re removing existing items from stores as well. This likely means AREA-X has lost the rights to sell SpongeBob merchandise, as the license from Nickelodeon is expiring. The products will be removed from shelves on December 30, 2025.
Why AREA-X’s Announcement Has Sparked LEGO SpongeBob Speculation
Dominik Bošnjak / Game Rant | Source images: LEGO Group, Nickelodeon Now that AREA-X has stopped making SpongeBob SquarePants building sets, many fans are wondering if LEGO might start producing them. Brick Fanatics points out that LEGO often acquires licenses for popular brands shortly after another company loses them. This recently happened with Pokémon – Mattel’s Mega brand announced they’d stop making Pokémon sets in December 2025, and LEGO announced a Pokémon collaboration the very next day. This pattern has led to speculation that SpongeBob could be next.
Other Evidence Supporting the LEGO SpongeBob Comeback Theory
Evidence suggesting LEGO might bring back SpongeBob includes a potential collaboration with the game Fortnite. Leaks hint at a SpongeBob and Fortnite crossover, which would follow a similar pattern to The Simpsons – they had a Fortnite event and new LEGO sets released in 2025. Plus, a new SpongeBob movie is scheduled to come out on December 19th, meaning we could soon see more SpongeBob merchandise available, including possibly LEGO sets.

Previous LEGO sets based on SpongeBob SquarePants were mostly designed for young children, around ages 5 to 7 and older. It’s unknown if LEGO will take the same approach if they release new SpongeBob sets soon. However, recent reports about LEGO sets for adults featuring Pokémon hint that LEGO might be focusing more on building sets for older fans as their original audience grows up.
AREA-X, a Chinese brand, continues to offer 18 different SpongeBob products on its website through December 30th. These items range in price from $19.50 for a “Rolling in Money” (Mr. Krabs Version) item to $154 for Spongebob’s Pineapple House. Plus, every order comes with a free mystery gift worth $9.90 as part of their holiday sale.
