Nintendo Switch Online Update Adds 2 Classic N64 Games

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers now have two more classic games to enjoy: Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble. These games have been added to the Nintendo 64 library within the Nintendo Classics section of the service. For $50 a year, subscribers can upgrade to the Expansion Pack and get everything included in the basic $20 yearly membership, plus downloadable content and access to a collection of games only available with the Expansion Pack.

The Nintendo 64 is home to many all-time great games, making the Switch Online Expansion Pack appealing to those who remember them fondly. Though it had a rocky start, the service has improved a lot with regular updates, now offering almost the entire library of classic N64 titles. The latest update added another beloved, though often forgotten, game to the collection.

The latest update to Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack adds two Ubisoft games: Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble. Both are good games, but Tonic Trouble is a hidden gem, and Rayman 2 is particularly deserving of more recognition as one of the best N64 titles. Despite receiving positive reviews when it first came out, Rayman 2 is often overlooked in discussions about the greatest N64 games – it really should be considered among them.

First appearing on the Nintendo 64, Rayman 2: The Great Escape was a huge step forward for the Rayman series. The original game was a challenging 2D platformer, but Rayman 2 fully embraced 3D graphics and gameplay, looking great for its time. It cleverly used Rayman’s skills to create fun and innovative levels, and remains one of the best platformers of that generation. It’s surprising, then, that it isn’t often mentioned alongside classics like Super Mario 64.

I’m a big fan of Rayman 2: The Great Escape and think any 3D platformer enthusiast should play it. It’s now even easier to access thanks to the Switch Online Expansion Pack! Adding it to the Nintendo Classics library really improves the Nintendo 64 collection available through the Expansion Pack, though there are still a few missing games we’re hoping to see added soon.

Switch Online Still Needs Donkey Kong 64 and Super Smash Bros.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the addition of Donkey Kong 64 and Super Smash Bros. to the Nintendo Switch Online service. A recently leaked list of upcoming games – which accurately predicted the release of Rayman 2 – indicates these two titles will likely be added to the Expansion Pack tier in the future. Players should watch for an official announcement from Nintendo.
