This week, Netflix removed the long-running series Supernatural from its platform. The popular horror show had been a fixture on Netflix for over ten years, but after its licensing agreement ended, it’s now available to stream on Peacock and Amazon Prime.
The popular series Supernatural has been a hit on streaming platforms for years, first appearing on Netflix in 2012. While it recently left Netflix on December 18th, fans still have options to watch all 15 seasons. Peacock will start streaming the show on December 22nd, and all episodes are already available on Amazon Prime. For those looking for another spooky series, Netflix recently added Castle Rock, a Stephen King-inspired show that moved from Hulu and is a great alternative for Supernatural fans.
Supernatural is No Longer on Netflix, But Castle Rock is a Strong Addition to its Horror Lineup
- Castle Rock is based on the Stephen King universe.
- The series was short-lived, only spanning two seasons.
- Unlike Supernatural‘s continuing narrative, Castle Rock is an anthology series.
While it doesn’t have as many episodes as shows like Supernatural, the series Castle Rock delivers intense psychological horror rooted in the world of Stephen King. Set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine, the show weaves together characters and settings from many of King’s most famous stories – you’ll likely recognize places like Shawshank Prison and Jerusalem’s Lot. Though there have been several good Stephen King adaptations recently, Castle Rock is a standout that deserves more attention from horror fans.
Even if you haven’t read Stephen King, the series Castle Rock captures the same unsettling and mysterious atmosphere as the early seasons of Supernatural. Beyond its genuinely creepy stories, Castle Rock benefits from a fantastic cast in both of its seasons. Season one features Bill Skarsgard, Melanie Lynskey, Sissy Spacek, Andre Holland, and Jane Levy, and season two introduces Lizzy Caplan, Elsie Fisher, and Tim Robbins. If you’re looking for both horror and strong acting, Castle Rock is a great choice now on Netflix.
This year has been fantastic for fans of Stephen King and horror in general. We saw The Long Walk adapted into a movie, and HBO Max’s IT: Welcome to Derry gave us a more in-depth and terrifying look at Pennywise.
Since Warner Bros. already owns the rights to a lot of Stephen King stories, including IT, it’s not surprising that Castle Rock is coming to Netflix. Netflix recently announced plans to buy Warner Bros. for $82.7 billion, and Warner Bros. has the rights to popular King titles like The Shawshank Redemption, Salem’s Lot, and The Shining. This move could be Netflix trying to add more Stephen King content to its service before the purchase is finalized. It’s a bit puzzling, though, that Netflix didn’t renew the licensing agreement for Supernatural, which was also a Warner Bros. production. But even though Supernatural is now on Peacock and Amazon Prime, horror fans can still enjoy Castle Rock, which is now available to stream on Netflix.
