Subscription services such as PlayStation Plus and Game Pass are now a permanent part of the gaming landscape. While their impact on the industry has been complex, they’ve undeniably provided great value for players, especially those looking for affordable gaming options.
By 2025, PlayStation Plus had become a leading subscription service. For a long time, Xbox Game Pass was more popular thanks to its lower price and the fact that new games were often available on it from day one. However, Game Pass had a difficult year. In November, the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate—which includes all benefits and day-one access to games—increased from $20 to $30 per month. PlayStation Plus Premium, at $18 a month, and the more affordable PlayStation Plus Extra, at just $15, offered compelling value. In 2025, PlayStation Plus Extra, in particular, provided a lot of content for its $15 monthly price.
The following list is in no particular order.
Pacific Drive
Check Out Pacific Drive On OpenCritic
Pacific Drive is a truly unique indie game, blending elements of games like Stalker and Car Mechanic Simulator. You’re stranded in a strange and unsettling area of the Pacific Northwest called The Zone, and your only allies are your car and some voices on the radio. The game focuses on scavenging and improving car parts, rather than using weapons, in a single-player experience where you venture in and out of dangerous territory. It’s a creepy and captivating take on ‘zone-horror,’ a style also seen in works like Roadside Picnic, Annihilation, and the Metro series.

Grand Theft Auto 5
Read Game Rant’s Grand Theft Auto 5’s Current-Gen Review
Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the most acclaimed games ever made. When it came out in 2013, it lived up to the hype, and it’s amazing to think it first appeared on the PS3 and Xbox 360, pushing those consoles to their limits. While Rockstar’s later game, Red Dead Redemption 2, might be even more impressive, GTA 5 remains a special and important game that rightfully earned its praise.

Silent Hill 2
Read Game Rant’s Silent Hill 2 Review
I went into the Silent Hill 2 remake with very low expectations. Konami hadn’t released a truly great game in years, and the development team, Bloober Team, hadn’t consistently delivered high-quality experiences. But I was completely mistaken. This remake is surprisingly sensitive, well-considered, and builds upon the original without changing what made it special. It doesn’t replace the iconic 2001 version, but it’s arguably just as good. This is easily one of the best remakes ever made, and it could be the game that finally turns Konami around.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Read Game Rant’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon Review
Turn-based combat in games often divides players, so when the creators of the Yakuza series announced a switch to this style for their 2020 game, fans had a varied response. While the turn-based battles in Yakuza: Like a Dragon aren’t groundbreaking, they are enjoyable. However, the game’s true strength lies in its story and characters. Like a Dragon features some of the most endearing characters in RPGs, with side quests and minigames that are consistently funny and creative. Though the story can be over-the-top at times, it feels remarkably new and engaging thanks to Ichiban Kasuga, a compelling character who feels like a natural successor to Kazuma Kiryu.

Lies of P
Read Game Rant’s Lies of P Review
Wow, I was seriously blown away by Lies of P – it’s easily one of the best games I’ve played in a while! I went in expecting something similar to Bloodborne, since that’s what it seemed like at first, but it completely exceeded my expectations. It’s incredibly unique, with a story and gameplay that felt both new and really ambitious. Honestly, it’s a breath of fresh air in a genre that can sometimes feel a little stale – it really shakes things up!

Sword of the Sea
Read Game Rant’s Sword of the Sea Review
Giant Squid, the team behind the beloved games ABZU and The Pathless, released Sword of the Sea in August 2025 to widespread critical acclaim. Like their previous titles, it’s a relaxing, concise game focused on graceful movement, but with a surprising emotional impact. Sword of the Sea successfully blends the beautiful and diverse environments of ABZU with the streamlined and enjoyable exploration of The Pathless, creating a game that’s both visually stunning and mechanically engaging – even more so than ABZU. Many consider it to be Giant Squid’s greatest achievement.

Risk of Rain 2
Check out Risk of Rain 2 on OpenCritic
Lots of roguelike games have come out over the years, and the genre has become really popular recently. But Risk of Rain 2 stands out as one of the very best. While it doesn’t have the deep story of Hades or the stunning graphics of Returnal or God of War Ragnarok‘s Valhalla expansion, it offers an incredible amount of content and a truly amazing progression system. Every playthrough of Risk of Rain 2 feels unique thanks to its well-designed characters and the way upgrades constantly build on top of each other, creating a thrilling and varied experience.

Indika
Read Game Rant’s Indika Review
Wow, Indika is just… different. It’s seriously avant-garde! The game follows a nun questioning her beliefs in this really cool, alternate version of 19th-century Russia with a bit of a steampunk vibe. I don’t want to give anything away, but trust me, it’s less about traditional gameplay and more about a full-on audiovisual experience. You can probably finish it in around 4 hours. It doesn’t have a ton of complex mechanics like some games, but it uses interactivity in really clever ways. If you’re after a story that’s bold, funny, and maybe even a little disturbing, you absolutely need to check out Indika. I was hooked!

Cyberpunk 2077
Read Game Rant’s Cyberpunk 2077 Review
Despite a rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 is a truly exceptional game. It features incredibly well-written stories, a satisfying character progression system, stunning graphics, and intense combat – making it one of the best modern RPGs. If the game had been more polished at release, it likely would have received the praise it deserves. However, even now, it’s a must-play for fans of RPGs, action games, and titles like The Witcher and Fallout 3.

Red Dead Redemption
Read Game Rant’s Red Dead Redemption Review
Look, Red Dead Redemption 2 is amazing, and a lot of people think it’s even better. But honestly, the original Red Dead Redemption still holds up incredibly well. It was seriously ahead of its time and really cemented Rockstar’s reputation for telling fantastic stories. John Marston is just such a compelling character, though if you’ve only played the second game, you might see a slightly different side of him. It’s not as refined or detailed as Red Dead 2, of course, but it’s a total classic and one of the best games from that generation – you absolutely have to play it.
