While the name ‘Xbox 720’ has become a popular joke, it might actually be a smart move. Given what’s proven successful in modern gaming, a slightly unconventional name could help Microsoft regain its position as a leader and reignite the competition with other console makers.

Microsoft’s naming of its Xbox consoles has always been a bit strange. It began with the original Xbox in 2001, followed by the oddly named Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 was a huge success, putting Microsoft in direct competition with Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo. Many consider the Xbox 360 to be a high point for Microsoft in the gaming world, and it might be a good idea for future consoles to acknowledge this successful era with a name that pays tribute to it, given the inconsistent naming pattern so far.

As a longtime gamer, I still chuckle whenever I think about the Xbox One – what a name! And then they jumped to the Series X|S, which felt…unexpected, to say the least. Honestly, wouldn’t it be hilarious – and maybe even brilliant – if Microsoft went full circle and called their next console the Xbox 720? They could really lean into the joke and tap into that old-school “console wars” nostalgia, which could seriously boost sales. Microsoft’s already hinting at a huge power upgrade for their next system, and they’re going to need it. With Steam finally releasing a proper gaming PC and Sony inevitably working on the PlayStation 6, the competition is going to be fierce. A little bit of fun with the name might be just what Microsoft needs to stand out.

By 2025, the PlayStation 5 had outsold the Xbox 360. While Microsoft is concentrating on online games and releasing titles on multiple platforms, they won’t likely accept this loss without a fight. The Xbox 360 was popular because it performed better than the PS3, particularly for online gaming. If Microsoft can create a new Xbox – potentially called the 720 – that matches that level of performance and also offers graphics and speed comparable to a PC, they could seriously challenge Sony for dominance in the market.

It remains to be seen whether the next Xbox will actually be called the Xbox 720, or if Microsoft will choose a different name, but many hope the new system will be as good as – or even better than – the Xbox 360.
