Vampires have been a popular subject in stories for centuries, beginning with classic novels like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla. They soon appeared on screen, starting with the 1922 silent film Nosferatu, which was based on the Dracula story. While Dracula is the most famous vampire, female vampires have been part of the mythos for just as long.
Vampires have remained a popular choice for movie monsters, frequently serving as compellingly beautiful and frightening villains. While they appear human, they hide a savage, predatory nature. We often hear about male vampires, but the female vampires are just as famous – and sometimes even more so.
10. Mina Harker (League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
Now, A Vampire Herself
Both the comic book and movie, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, include Mina Harker, a memorable character from Dracula who gained vampirism from the Count himself. She joins a team of famous literary heroes—including Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Ishmael—who work together to prevent a villain named Fantom from killing important world leaders and starting a global war.
Mina Harker is a powerful and capable member of the team, easily holding her own against any man. She’s not only a vampire who can’t be killed, but also a skilled scientist – a true combination of strength and intelligence. When kidnapped and used as a pawn to threaten her colleagues, she refuses to be a helpless victim, instead turning the tables on her attacker and draining their blood.
9. Eve (Only Lovers Left Alive)
Only A Vampire Can Truly Love You Forever
The film Only Lovers Left Alive is a beautifully sad and romantic story about two vampires, Adam and Eve, and their long-lasting relationship. It’s different from typical vampire movies – you won’t find a lot of fantasy, scary myths, or violence. Instead, it’s a quiet film that follows Adam and Eve as they spend their nights thinking about life and what it means to live forever.
What I really loved about this film was its stripped-down, realistic feel. It allowed the characters to truly shine. Eve, especially, felt so real – a strong, level-headed woman who clearly adored Adam. You immediately get the sense she’s fiercely protective of him, particularly when he starts to struggle with depression. Honestly, I found myself completely invested in their relationship and really admiring Eve’s strength and devotion. You just want them to make it.
8. Miriam Blaylock (The Hunger)
An Icy Vampire Who Is Seductive And Intimidating
Unlike most vampire movies, The Hunger doesn’t rely on typical vampire clichés. The film centers on Miriam and John, a vampire couple living a luxurious life in New York City. Miriam turned John into a vampire and is the dominant partner in their relationship. After centuries of having various lovers, she eventually seeks a new companion and chooses a doctor named Sarah.
Catherine Deneuve gives a captivating performance as Miriam, a character who is both mysterious and subtly frightening. While we do see her feeding on blood, what truly makes Miriam otherworldly is her chilling demeanor, elegant style, and overall presence. She feels both beyond and beneath humanity, and the story deliberately keeps her past shrouded in secrecy, adding to her enigma.
7. The Brides (Van Helsing)
An Ever-Present Threat
Following orders from the Vatican, Van Helsing travels to Transylvania with a mission: to destroy Dracula and safeguard Anna and Velkan Valerious, the last of a Romanian family dedicated to defeating the vampire. However, he soon discovers that Dracula isn’t the only threat, as his three brides – Aleera, Marishka, and Verona – are terrifying in their own right, and possibly even more dangerous than Dracula himself.
These three characters are incredibly powerful, able to fly and easily defeat their enemies. Even though they don’t all survive, they’re a memorable and beloved part of the film, consistently ranking as fan favorites.
6. Santanico Pandemonium (From Dusk Till Dawn)
Her Entrance Is Still Fondly Recalled To This Day
In the film From Dusk Till Dawn, a pair of robbers kidnap a family on vacation and use them to help them cross the border. Their destination is a strip club where they’re supposed to meet a man named Carlos at sunrise. Once inside, they’re surprised by a performance from the club’s dancers, and one dancer, Santanico Pandemonium, captivates everyone who sees her.
Santanico instantly stands out as the most captivating character in the film, even though she isn’t the lead. Her name is incredibly unique, and she commands attention whenever she’s on screen. Initially presented as a stunningly beautiful woman, she quickly transforms into a terrifying vampire, which is both shocking and a fresh take on classic vampire lore.
5. Akasha (Queen Of The Damned)
The Great Mother Of All Vampires
Following the story of Interview with the Vampire, Queen of the Damned revisits the iconic vampire Lestat. He boldly reveals his true identity, attracting the attention of those who study the paranormal. His music unexpectedly stirs Akasha, the very first vampire, from a long slumber.
Even while chasing Lestat, Akasha remains a compelling character, vividly portrayed as both seductive and dangerous through her ruthless acts – like effortlessly killing other vampires. She captivates viewers in every scene, maintaining that power until her impactful death near the film’s end. It’s unfortunate fans likely won’t see her portrayed again, but her performance in Queen of the Damned remains a memorable and iconic contribution to the vampire genre.
4. Lucy Westenra (Bram Stoker’s Dracula)
A Haunting Vampire Transformation
Gary Oldman’s over-the-top performance as Dracula is so captivating that it’s easy to overlook the film actually features several vampires. While Jonathan Harker encounters Dracula’s brides, Lucy stands out as the most memorable female vampire. Unlike many other characters, we see Lucy as a human before she’s bitten, becomes ill, and tragically transforms into a vampire. Her eventual death at the hands of Van Helsing and his team isn’t a victory, but a heartbreaking event.
Even though she’s only in the movie for a short while, Lucy is a memorable character and could be considered a standout. She transforms from a vulnerable human into a frightening, ghostly figure – a white-clad vampire bride who barely resembles her former self.
3. Eli (Let The Right One In)
A Young Girl Navigating Vampirism And A New Friendship
In the quiet Swedish suburb of Blackenberg, a boy named Oskar is often bullied at school. When a new girl, Eli, moves in next door, she brightens his life. They become friends, and she helps him find the courage to confront his bullies.
Oskar doesn’t know it yet, but Eli is no ordinary girl – she’s a vampire, which is why she initially resists becoming his friend. Something – whether it’s sympathy, a genuine connection, or her own needs – drives her to connect with Oskar. Throughout the film, Eli fiercely defends Oskar from bullies, even going to extreme lengths to stop them. While her methods are sometimes over the top, her protectiveness is charming and shows she’ll always be there for him, no matter what happens.
Honorable mention to Chloë Grace Moretz’s Abby in Let Me In, the American remake.
2. Claudia (Interview With The Vampire)
A Thought-Provoking Take On Vampirism In Children
Based on Anne Rice’s famous novel, Interview with the Vampire tells the story of two vampires, Louis and Lestat, as Louis recounts his life to a journalist. The film uses flashbacks to show how Louis became a vampire, his experiences in the 1800s, and his increasing resentment towards Lestat. Lestat, trying to control Louis, turns a young girl named Claudia into a vampire, tragically condemning her to live forever as a child.
Claudia’s story is fascinating because it explores the challenges of living forever in a child’s body while still growing up mentally. The movie shows her struggling with this, which understandably leads to anger towards Lestat and Louis. Sadly, her life ends tragically when she’s destroyed by sunlight. Despite this, Claudia remains a memorable character and is often considered one of the most overlooked vampires in film history.
1. Selene (The Underworld Franchise)
The Coolest Female Vampire To Ever Grace the Big Screen
I’m a huge fan of the Underworld movies! They’re so atmospheric and follow Selene, a vampire who gets caught right in the middle of a war between vampires and werewolves – lycans, as they’re called in the films. Selene quickly became one of my all-time favorite movie vampires. There are five main Underworld films, which gives you a lot of action to enjoy. While I didn’t love everything about Blood Wars, the whole series is still awesome!
Even when the Underworld movies aren’t great, Selene consistently stands out as a strong and compelling character. She’s a fantastic example of a smart, capable, and well-developed female vampire – much more than just a ruthless killer. She’s thoughtful enough to challenge authority and caring enough to help others, like the hybrid Michael. Though her story is over, Selene’s impact is lasting, and the Underworld films wouldn’t be the same without her as the central hero.
