As a researcher who has spent countless hours delving into the complexities of cryptocurrencies and their impact on society, I find myself deeply moved by the story of Ross Ulbricht, the creator of Silk Road, currently serving his 11th year in prison. The resilience and determination he displays through his tweets are truly inspiring.
As a passionate crypto investor, I’ve just received some intriguing news straight from a fellow community member – none other than Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the infamous darknet marketplace Silk Road, who is currently incarcerated. In a rare tweet, he’s chosen to share his latest updates and thoughts with us from behind bars.
On this occasion, Ulbricht disclosed an achievement that could be deemed as a significant “step forward” during his incarceration.
4,000 days, or 11 years, in prison
The creator of Silk Road noted that a significant achievement for him was completing 4,000 days behind bars. Ulbricht has served an eleven-year sentence and is set to commence his twelfth year in prison in just two weeks.
Previously, Ulbricht expressed his efforts to transform and improve himself, saying “I have striven to grow and become a better person.” Now, he declares that he is prepared to apply the tough lessons he’s gathered during his incarceration “to make restitution as a free individual.
For fourteen long years now, I’ve been confined within prison walls. In two weeks, I’ll mark my twelfth year here. Throughout this time, I’ve strived for personal growth and self-improvement. If granted a second chance, I aspire to apply the harsh lessons I’ve learned to make amends and better myself as a free man.

The online community of cryptocurrency enthusiasts expressed broad encouragement for him, expressing hope that he would be freed swiftly. If the U.S. presidential election results in November favor the Republican candidate, Ulbricht’s situation could potentially be resolved, as the candidate pledged to commute Ulbricht’s life sentence if elected.
At age 29 in 2013, Ulbricht began serving his two life sentences. This was after the closure of the Silk Road, which he had run for two years prior. Unfortunately, despite Ulbricht’s initial aim to challenge the status quo by providing a platform for unregulated trading, the Silk Road swiftly evolved into a marketplace for illicit items such as drugs and other prohibited goods and services. The unique aspect of this market was its use of Bitcoin as the method of exchange.
Ross Ulbricht vs. Sam Bankman-Fried
Supporters of cryptocurrency have stood by Ulbricht since his initial imprisonment, as many believe his sentence was unfair. Frequently, crypto enthusiasts and libertarians draw parallels between Ulbricht’s case and that of Sam Bankman-Fried, the ex-CEO of the failed FTX exchange who is accused of defrauding investors and traders out of billions in U.S. dollars.
On the contrary, it’s widely held that SBF is serving a more lenient prison term compared to Ulbricht. Moreover, while Ulbricht was given a double life sentence, Bankman-Fried was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison.
