Rumor: New Batman Rocksteady Game Could Be Getting Backed by PlayStation

Key Takeaways

  • Rocksteady Studios is reportedly working on a new Batman game.
  • Sony is supposedly attempting to “moneyhat” the project, suggesting the title could be a PlayStation exclusive.
  • Rocksteady’s return to a single-player Batman game follows the poor reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the news of Rocksteady Studios working on a new Batman game has me more excited than a kid on Christmas morning. The Arkham series was a pinnacle of superhero gaming, and I can only imagine what they might have up their sleeves this time around.

An industry insider has revealed that developer Rocksteady Studios is now working on a new Batman game, with PlayStation currently in the process of attempting to back the project. The last Batman game to be developed by Rocksteady Studios was 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight, but the studio would then go on to develop its first non-Batman title since 2006 with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which was released earlier this year.

Despite an upcoming VR game based on Batman: Arkham series due out in October, it’s important to note that the Meta Quest 3 exclusive titled Batman: Arkham Shadow isn’t developed by Rocksteady Studios. While Rocksteady did create a VR game called Batman: Arkham VR back in 2016, they aren’t part of the development process for Arkham Shadow. However, this new VR title will be set within the universe created by Rocksteady and will serve as a sequel to Batman: Arkham Origins, which was launched for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC in 2013.

Following the less-than-stellar response from fans towards Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League when it dropped in February, it seems Rocksteady Studios is returning to its original focus and developing a fresh Batman game. As per XboxEra co-founder Shpeshal_Nick’s tweet, this upcoming Batman title could potentially have backing from PlayStation, with the insider hinting that Sony is “trying to secure funding for it.” However, the exact stage of collaboration between the two studios remains uncertain, as there’s no deal in place as of now.

PlayStation Attempting to Back New Rocksteady Batman Game

In response to Nick’s tweet, a fan proposed that Rocksteady might be developing a remastered version of Batman: Arkham Origins instead of a new game. However, this notion was swiftly debunked by an insider who claimed that the team is actually working on an entirely new game and not a remaster or remake. Since Rocksteady is under Warner Bros. Games, any potential new Batman game would likely still be published by them. Interestingly, PlayStation seems to be trying to secure the rights for this upcoming title, hinting at their desire to make it an exclusive PlayStation release.

It’s no surprise that Rocksteady might be focusing on a standalone Batman game again, given the challenges faced with the live-service elements of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Previously, whispers about a new single-player Batman project from Rocksteady surfaced in June, as reported by Bloomberg, following the release of Suicide Squad. However, if the gossip is accurate, the game is believed to be in its early stages of development, so fans shouldn’t anticipate any formal announcements just yet.
