Jagex announced that 2026 will be a landmark year for RuneScape, celebrating its 25th anniversary with more investment and new content than ever before. They’ve promised an exciting plan for fans to look forward to.
The ‘RS25’ program marks the beginning of a major transformation for RuneScape, potentially the biggest in the game’s history. Plans include the RuneFest event in the UK, a local area network (LAN) event for Old School RuneScape, improved support for content creators, and a complete revitalization of the game.
RuneScape is Evolving More Than Ever in 2026
This year marks RuneScape’s 25th anniversary, a remarkable achievement for any online game, especially one that’s still being played. As one of the earliest massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), RuneScape helped pave the way for today’s games that are constantly updated with new content and evolve over time.
Reaching this year wasn’t easy, but it’s finally here, and Jagex has lots of exciting plans for 2026.
RuneScape fans can look forward to RuneFest 2026 in Birmingham, England this October, with exciting announcements, talks from the developers, and special events for the community. Before that, the game is heading to the US with a live Deadman All-Stars show. Later in the year, a fan-organized LAN party is also planned, with the location to be announced soon.
An all-new press release revealed what’s coming this year to the game ecosystem itself
RuneScape is about to get a big update! We’re improving the game with a focus on honesty, fresh visuals, and what players love most about it. This includes updating player characters, enhancing the graphics, and making our player support much better – all to create a better experience for our community.
Following a community vote in November 2025, RuneScape will eliminate its Treasure Hunter microtransaction system. This change represents a significant move towards prioritizing players and being more open about how the game is developed.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds will also expand through 2026 after a successful launch last year.
Jagex was also celebrating a major company milestone with a special line of merchandise. More items will be released throughout the year.
In a statement, the CEO of Jagex, Jon Bellamy, wrote:
It’s amazing to realize it’s been 25 years since RuneScape started as a simple game you played in your web browser. Today, we have the biggest and most engaged RuneScape community ever, and this anniversary belongs to them as much as it does to us.
Jagex released an 11-minute video celebrating 25 years of RuneScape, and you can watch it here:
2024 looks like an amazing year for RuneScape players! While the game has faced some challenges recently, the community is really excited about the huge amount of new content planned through 2026.
