2025 was a great year for first-person shooter fans, offering several exciting titles. Doom: The Dark Ages successfully revitalized the series with its intense combat and a standout shield. Borderlands 4 delivered the classic open-world RPG experience, packed with weapons and diverse character customization options. And Battlefield 6 provided a reliable and engaging military shooter.
Will 2026 deliver as many great first-person shooter games as 2025? It’s tough to predict exactly what will be released, but if these games come out as planned, 2026 promises a diverse selection, including everything from scary horror titles to immersive role-playing games.
Highguard
Mixing Fantasy With Reality
- Planned Release Date: 1/26/26
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
I was so hyped when Highguard was first shown at The Game Awards last December! And now, just a month later, it’s almost here! What’s really exciting is that it’s being made by Wildlight Entertainment – a team full of people who used to work at Respawn Entertainment on games like Titanfall and Apex Legends. That instantly tells me it’s going to be something special – those guys know how to make a great game!
This upcoming game is a free-to-play shooter where you play as heroes in a fantasy setting. While the world is fantastical, the weapons are realistic – everything from rifles to rocket launchers. A unique feature is the ability to shoot while riding a horse, which promises exciting but potentially difficult gameplay.
Don’t Stop, Girlypop!
Lollipop Chainsaw With Guns
- Planned Release Date: 1/29/26
- Planned Systems: PC
The game Don’t Stop, Girlypop! was first revealed in 2024 and is currently being made by Funny Fintan Softworks, a team based in Australia. A demo is available to try on Steam.
Okay, as a fan, this game immediately reminded me of Suda51’s Lollipop Chainsaw! The whole look – all those bright pinks and neon colors – is just incredible and totally over-the-top for a first-person shooter. But it’s not just about the visuals! While you’re taking down these weird, strangely-shaped enemies, you can actually use a flip phone, take care of a digital pet, and even customize your character’s arm with different outfits. It’s seriously wild and a lot of fun!
High On Life 2
Beyond Bizarre
- Planned Release Date: 2/13/26
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S
Released in 2022, High On Life was a unique first-person shooter where each weapon talked and had its own distinct personality. The game featured a talented voice cast, including Tim Robinson and J.B. Smoove, and some of these actors—along with their weapon characters—will be appearing in High On Life 2.
The game was initially planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, but a version for the new Switch 2 console has been added. This is good news for the Switch 2, which doesn’t have many shooting games available. It’s launching in February, and while details are still limited, players can likely expect the same fun, over-the-top shooting action and humorous storytelling as previous installments.
Toxic Commando
The Master Of Horror
- Planned Release Date: 3/12/26
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Originally announced in 2023, the game Toxic Commando (also known as John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando) is finally set to release in March. Horror enthusiasts will recognize the name John Carpenter, the director behind classic films such as Halloween, The Thing, and They Live.
The game’s story and music were created by Carpenter, and it’s being built by Saber Interactive, a studio known for re-releasing popular games like the different versions of Halo. Players can drive through hordes of zombies, eliminating them from their vehicle or fighting on foot, and they can do this solo or with friends online.
Mouse: P.I. For Hire
An FPS Blitz On All Systems
- Planned Release Date: 3/19/26
- Planned Systems: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
Mouse: P.I. For Hire is set to release on almost every gaming platform imaginable. Fans of Cuphead will likely enjoy this game too, as it features a similar black and white, cartoon-style art style, but in a first-person shooter format.
In the game, you play as detective Jack Pepper, voiced by Troy Baker, and explore the city to solve crimes. Gameplay involves both shooting rodent enemies and taking photos, with more mysteries expected to be revealed in March.
Marathon
Going Back To Basics
- Planned Release Date: March 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Bungie first achieved major success with the game Marathon, which eventually became a series of three games just before they became famous with Halo. Now, after many years, they’re reimagining Marathon as a first-person shooter where players extract resources, potentially to compete with games like ARC Raiders or even their own Destiny.
The development of Marathon has been quite rocky, with the game being cancelled, revived, and facing several issues. After numerous delays, it’s now scheduled to launch in March. With so many multiplayer shooters already available, can Bungie succeed in capturing players’ attention again?
Halo: Campaign Evolved
Beginning The Fight
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Regarding Bungie and Halo, Halo: Combat Evolved is a revamped version of the classic 2001 game. While it received an updated version called Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in 2011, this new remake will be significantly different.
As a huge Halo fan, I’m really excited to hear that 343 Industries is prioritizing the campaign for this update! They’re not doing a full remake or remaster, which is cool with me – they’re focusing on what really matters. And get this – we’ll be able to play the campaign with up to three friends in co-op! Even better, it’s going to have crossplay, meaning players on Xbox, PC, and even PlayStation 5 can all play together. Honestly, seeing a Halo game on PlayStation is something I never thought I’d see, and I can’t wait to experience it!
Valor Mortis
An Alternate History Soulslike
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Let’s be real, Soulslike shooters are rare, and first-person ones? Even rarer. Most developers seem to stick to the third-person action RPG style for those kinds of games. But I’m really excited about Valor Mortis because it’s looking like a major exception. It’s set in France, around the Napoleonic era – the late 1700s or early 1800s – which is a really cool setting for a Soulslike.
This game presents a unique take on history where soldiers on the battlefield begin to mutate. Players will use weapons and tactics of the time, but also unlock supernatural abilities as they progress and gain experience.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2
A Retro Throwback
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 appears to be a fast-paced and enjoyable throwback to classic games. It features a unique art style – characters are created using sprites, but the environments are more detailed and modern, similar to the HD-2D look made popular by Square Enix.
The game has a really neat visual style, and the gameplay seems just as exciting as the original version from 2023. It’s amazing how much time has passed, but with so many different Warhammer games being released, they can easily get overlooked. Still, anyone who enjoyed 90s first-person shooters should definitely check this one out – it’s a fun throwback to that era.
Crisol: Theater Of Idols
Bloodsport
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Horror game fans have something to look forward to with Crisol: Theater of Idols, which is currently planned for release in 2026. The game takes place in Spain and features a range of terrifying enemies, from people in animal masks to demonic creatures. Players will fight back using a unique weapon that shoots blood bullets, and a demo is available on Steam right now.
The game is a collaboration between new studio Vermila Studios and publisher Blumhouse. Blumhouse is well-known for successful horror films like Happy Death Day, Get Out, and The Black Phone, making their move into video games an interesting step.
