Marc-Alexis Côté, who previously led the Assassin’s Creed franchise, is suing Ubisoft for $1.3 million. He filed the lawsuit in Quebec’s Superior Court, claiming damages from the company.
This file appears several months after Ubisoft said Marc-Alexis Côté had voluntarily left the company. However, Côté later said this wasn’t true, explaining that he was actually asked to leave his position.
In a recent LinkedIn post, Côté explained that many people were surprised by his departure from the Assassin’s Creed franchise, considering his continued enthusiasm for it. He clarified that he didn’t actually choose to leave.
He added, “I also need to be clear about something for my current and former teams: I wasn’t the one who left. Ubisoft asked me to leave my position, and I stayed as long as they wanted me to.”
According to a new report from CBC Radio Canada, Julien Côté is suing Ubisoft for $1.3 million, seeking both severance pay and compensation for emotional distress.
The report states that in late summer 2025, Côté learned in a management meeting that Ubisoft’s new partnership with Tencent was seeking a “Head of Franchise.” This role wasn’t offered to Côté, however. Instead, he was offered the position of “Head of Production,” which would have required him to report to another manager.
According to the lawsuit, in September, Ubisoft offered Côté the role of leading a new, experimental “Creative House.” Following extended discussions, Ubisoft allegedly asked him to commit to the changes, at which point Côté officially requested a severance package from the company.
Ubisoft reportedly asked Côté to stay home from his scheduled start date on October 13th and continue considering his options until the company responded to a formal notice. The following day, Ubisoft publicly announced and informed employees that Côté was leaving his role to “explore new opportunities.”
TopMob contacted Ubisoft for a statement, but hadn’t received one before publishing this article. If we receive a response later, we will add it here.
