Imu is the hidden ruler of the World Government, effectively controlling everything they do. They’ve held this power for hundreds of years, secretly influencing kingdoms around the world. While many believe Imu is the main antagonist of One Piece, much of their story remains a mystery.
For a long time, One Piece fans were completely in the dark about Imu’s powers and how strong they were. But the Elbaf arc has started to reveal more, with Oda now showing us details like Imu’s ability to transform into a demon.
This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Imu’s Physical Strength Increases By Several Folds
It Becomes Almost Impossible To Overwhelm With Pure Strength
Even though Imu has been featured throughout the story, we haven’t actually seen their face or body – only their outline. The same is true for their transformed, demon-like state. It’s hard to get a clear look, but it’s obvious that this transformation makes Imu much more powerful.
When I saw them transform into a demon, their size exploded – they became absolutely enormous, towering over even the already massive Five Elders, who themselves are transformed with Devil Fruits. Being that huge, they could simply crush anyone with their physical strength alone. They didn’t even need Haki or any special attacks. I also noticed a pointed tail forming during the transformation, and that’s actually how they stabbed Sabo in the room with the Empty Throne – it was a pretty shocking detail.
Imu’s Demon Form Allows Them To Fly
Imu Can Take Flight At Any Time
As we’ve seen, when Imu transforms into their demon form, their body changes significantly – they grow larger and develop wings. Wings are a common feature in images of Satan and demons, often used for flight. Imu proved they could fly after possessing Gunko’s body, as demonstrated in Elbaf.
It’s amazing how Imu’s possession of Gunko didn’t make him bigger, but instead gave him wings and a long tail! Those wings are incredible – Imu can fly at unbelievable speeds and completely dodge anything happening on the ground. I’m really hoping Oda shows us Imu’s true, full demon form before we get to the end of the Elbaf arc. It’s going to be epic!
Imu Possesses A Pentagram Grimoire
Imu Can Summon All Kinds Of Weapons
Fans should also remember that Imu can summon a special book, marked with a pentagram, whenever they want. This isn’t a normal book, though – it lets Imu create a dark, mysterious substance that can be shaped into any weapon they need.
Imu demonstrated a remarkable ability during the battle with Brogy in Elbaf, creating weapons instantly and severely injuring him. This power is a major reason why Imu is such a formidable character. While it’s likely Imu can do even more with the dark substance they control, their limited appearances make the full extent of their abilities unclear. As the likely final villain of One Piece, fans will probably learn more about Imu and their powers in future story arcs.
Imu Demon Form Is Not Limited To Just One Body
Imu Can Take Over Other Bodies
Imu definitely has a monstrous true form, but they can also possess anyone who has been granted the powers of the Depths and Abyss Covenants. We’ve seen this happen with characters like Gunko and Jaygarcia Saturn, whose bodies underwent some physical changes after Imu took control.
Once Imu takes control of someone, that person’s original personality disappears, and they act completely differently. Imu also gains access to all of the person’s abilities, including any Devil Fruit powers they might have. We saw this in Elbaf when Imu easily used Gunko’s fruit to cause destruction among the Giants. Plus, Imu can combine these borrowed powers with their own Haki. In fact, Imu unleashed such powerful Haki on Elbaf that almost everyone on the island felt it.
Imu’s Demon Form Is Likely Inspired By Satan
Oda Is Known For Taking Inspiration From Other Media
Imu is a central and powerful villain in One Piece. They’ve committed terrible acts, including eliminating anyone who opposed them and completely wiping islands – and even entire civilizations like the Ancient Kingdom – from existence and historical record. Imu has also orchestrated the killings of many influential figures they saw as potential threats.
Based on their actions and demonic transformations, Imu strongly resembles the figure of Satan from mythology and religion. Like Satan, Imu is cruel, malicious, and sees themself as better than others. Furthermore, the power and immortality Imu offers through their Covenants come with a significant price – the loss of one’s physical body. This echoes a common story trope where Satan-like figures grant desires but demand a steep cost in return.
