Razer CEO Explains Why Grok Powers Its New ‘Waifu’ Hologram

Okay, so Razer just announced something wild. It’s called Project AVA, and it’s basically an AI device that projects a holographic ‘waifu’ – think a virtual companion. It’s a cool-looking cylindrical gadget, and it’s powered by Grok AI. What’s really impressive is they’re saying this hologram isn’t just a static image; it’s designed to feel truly alive with a dynamic personality, and it’s supposed to react to you and the environment like a real person with ‘human-life vision’ and understand everything happening around it.

This handy gadget is like having a cheerful and helpful assistant right on your desk. It organizes your schedule and offers friendly conversation powered by Grok AI, created by Elon Musk.

The company’s CEO recently addressed why they are pushing forward with Grok, especially considering the recent controversies.

Why is Project AVA Using Grok? Because It’s the Best

Razer introduced Project AVA at CES, and it quickly became known as one of the show’s most groundbreaking – and potentially privacy-focused – devices. This small, tube-shaped gadget features Razer Chroma lighting and is designed for simplicity and usefulness. It includes a high-definition camera, microphones, LEDs, and its key feature: a system that projects a 5.5-inch, 3D holographic avatar.

So, Razer just showed off a bunch of cool accessories you can get for their new ‘wingman’ device – it’s a pretty strange mix, honestly! But the biggest thing is, they don’t even know when the main device, Project AVA, will actually come out. It’s still just an idea at this point, which is a little frustrating as a fan, but hopefully it means they’re really taking their time to get it right.

Several virtual companions are available for gamers. AVA is a pulsing, circular display of Razer’s signature energy, while Kira is designed as a classic anime-style female character and marketed as a ‘lovely gaming partner.’ Zane, on the other hand, is a strong, conventionally attractive male model with tattoos.

The team also includes Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, a globally famous professional League of Legends player widely considered one of the greatest of all time. Rounding out the roster is SAO, a virtual character based on kawausosuki0513, a Japanese content creator who portrays a typical office worker.

The main issue with Project AVA right now is that it’s being built using Grok, an AI engine. Grok has recently faced serious criticism because it’s been shown to generate nude images of people on X (formerly Twitter) even with simple prompts.

Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan recently shared the reason why his company chose to integrate with Grok initially.

We chose Grok because, currently, it provides the most natural and engaging conversational AI – particularly when it comes to personality. That was a key factor in our technical evaluation. However, our long-term vision is for Ava to be an open platform.

We’re definitely considering allowing users to choose different AI models in the future, as we’re building a system that supports multiple models. However, for the conversational AI demo at CES, we believe Grok offers the best conversational experience right now, which is why we chose it.

When asked how Razer can ensure user safety, Tan said:

We’re still at the beginning of understanding this technology. The key now is to figure out where it will lead us, but we need to do so carefully and with appropriate safeguards in place. We’re actively learning how to best navigate the implications of AI and how to use it responsibly.

We might need to add a physical lock, or perhaps more security measures within the software itself. We’re still figuring out the best solution right now.

We initially released the idea as a concept to gather feedback because we know we can’t anticipate every issue. Our goal is to incorporate as much thoughtful input as possible into the product before its official launch.
