GameStop has announced they’ve fixed a bug that allowed players to exploit the item trade-in system for unlimited money.
GameStop remains a popular brick-and-mortar video game retailer, regularly offering deals and promotions. Recently, they held a successful “Trade Anything Day” and then launched a new sale on used games. Unfortunately, some customers exploited the used game promotion, forcing GameStop to quickly end it.
Customers Were Buying and Trading in the Switch 2 at GameStop for Extra Credit
Here’s how a money glitch worked at GameStop: Customers could buy a Nintendo Switch 2 for $414.99 and a used game for under a dollar. By trading both items in, a special promotion would give them a total trade-in credit of $472.50. This meant they’d receive $57.51 in store credit, essentially getting money back on their purchase.
The YouTuber who found the glitch earned $600 from trading cards and also got the Switch 2 for a cheaper price than expected. Because the console was marked as used after the trade, they were able to get it for less.
GameStop recently acknowledged a loophole that allowed customers to repeatedly exploit a promotion for essentially unlimited profit. While the issue has now been fixed, the company clarified it won’t eliminate all promotions. They praised customers’ ingenuity but stated they don’t want their stores to be used for creating endless, unintended revenue.

GameStop is aware of the “GameStop Infinite Money Glitch,” exposed by YouTuber RJCmedia.
A special offer allowed customers to get more money for trading in a new Nintendo Switch 2. By buying the console for $414.99 and immediately trading it back in with a used game, they received a $472.50 trade-in credit – a bonus over the console’s original price.
Basically, a glitch temporarily allowed our system to give more trade-in value for a used console than the price of a new one. This briefly let customers repeatedly trade the same console to earn unlimited credit.
The problem that allowed players to exploit basic math for unlimited earnings has been fixed. We’ve updated the trade promotions to restore fairness and balance in the game.
GameStop loves running deals for our customers, but we want to remind everyone that our promotions aren’t meant to be exploited for unlimited gains. We appreciate the ingenuity, but our stores aren’t designed to endlessly generate money.
