Prince of Persia Remake and 5 Other Games Canceled by Ubisoft

Ubisoft has cancelled the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, along with five other games. The company originally announced the remake in 2020, but early gameplay footage received a lot of criticism from fans. Ubisoft had previously delayed the project hoping to improve it and better meet player expectations, but ultimately decided to cancel it.

Fans of Prince of Persia were anticipating the remake’s release in the coming months, and some speculated it might even be a surprise launch. There was also talk that Ubisoft would release the remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag alongside it. However, it appears those expectations won’t be met anytime soon.

Ubisoft has cancelled its remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, along with five other games, according to Jason Schreier. These include four projects that hadn’t been publicly announced for consoles and PCs, and one mobile game. Schreier also reports that Ubisoft is postponing the release of seven more games, with the Black Flag remake thought to be among them. These decisions are part of a bigger reorganization within the company.

While Ubisoft didn’t mention which other games were delayed or canceled, many fans online are wondering about Beyond Good & Evil 2. The game has been in development for a very long time, so it wouldn’t be shocking if it was among the canceled projects, though Ubisoft hasn’t confirmed this yet.

Why Ubisoft Has Canceled the Prince of Persia Remake

BREAKING: Ubisoft is canceling the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake and 5 other games (4 unannounced, 1 mobile). The company says it is also delaying 7 games (including an unannounced project believed to be a Black Flag remake) as part of a larger restructuring. — Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier.bsky.social) 2026-01-21T16:45:19.603Z

Jason Schreier confirmed the rumors and leaks about a potential release this month for the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake were false. He explained that Ubisoft wasn’t satisfied with the game’s current condition. This is disappointing news for fans who have been eagerly awaiting the remake for a long time. It also likely means that remakes of other Prince of Persia games from the PlayStation 2 era won’t happen.

Man, it felt like ages since a proper Prince of Persia game came out. After The Forgotten Sands in 2010, it was mostly just little mobile games. Then, finally, The Lost Crown dropped in 2024, and it was awesome! A really solid Metroidvania that I immediately got hooked on. It’s a shame though, because even though critics liked it, it didn’t seem to sell super well for Ubisoft. That’s a bummer!

The roguelike platformer The Rogue Prince of Persia came out in 2025 to generally good reviews, but its sales figures are uncertain. It appears the Prince of Persia brand isn’t as popular as it once was, and with the cancellation of The Sands of Time remake, it’s unlikely we’ll see a new game in the series for a while.
