One Piece: 8 Characters Who Need A Devil Fruit

In the anime and manga One Piece, characters gain power through two main sources: Haki and Devil Fruits. While Devil Fruits have been important to the story from the beginning, Haki became much more prominent after a significant jump in the storyline.

Developing Haki usually requires intense training. However, characters can gain power quickly by eating Devil Fruits. Even though One Piece is a long-running series, relatively few characters have gained Devil Fruit powers so far. That’s likely to change as the story reaches its climax, with the increasing danger and more challenging battles. Many characters who currently lack Devil Fruit abilities could greatly benefit from having one.

Usopp

  • Affiliation: Straw Hat Pirates

Usopp is generally considered the weakest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. While he’s the crew’s sniper, his fighting strength isn’t very high compared to the others in the One Piece world. He often represents the limits of what a normal human can achieve. A Devil Fruit power would likely be his biggest improvement, even after he gets better at using Observation Haki.

Usopp has a couple of potential paths to gaining new abilities: he could eat a Devil Fruit himself, or find a way to use a Devil Fruit-powered weapon. One idea is that he could give Kabuto a Devil Fruit, which would instantly make him much stronger. We might see Usopp get more powerful soon, maybe when they reach Elbaf.

Nami

  • Affiliation: Straw Hat Pirates

Nami is a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, but she’s generally not as physically strong as the others. While she’s had some key moments, her strength isn’t usually a highlight. Her most notable achievement was briefly stopping Yonko Big Mom during the Whole Cake Island arc by using Zeus.

While learning Haki would significantly boost Nami’s strength, it doesn’t seem likely to happen immediately. Another way for her to get stronger is through a Devil Fruit. Given that she already controls Zeus, a Devil Fruit ability related to weather could greatly enhance her powers. Importantly, Nami doesn’t necessarily need to eat the fruit herself; similar to Usopp, she could imbue her weapon, the Climatact, with its power.

Vivi

  • Affiliation: Straw Hat Pirates, Arabasta

Vivi was once thought of as an official member of the Straw Hat Pirates. Now, as the story reaches its climax, it looks like she’ll reunite with them soon. After her father’s passing and with the World Government pursuing her, it won’t be long before Vivi rejoins the crew.

Vivi’s biggest weakness is her lack of strength. She’s currently even less powerful than Usopp and Nami, leaving her vulnerable and potentially a burden to the crew. Before she rejoins them, it would be ideal if she could gain some power, perhaps through a Devil Fruit. Considering how important Vivi will be in the upcoming final arc, giving her an upgrade is crucial.

Bepo

  • Affiliation: Heart Pirates

Bepo is part of the Heart Pirates, led by Trafalgar Law, and is their strongest fighter after Law himself. However, the rest of the Heart Pirates aren’t very powerful. After a battle with Blackbeard, everyone except Law and Bepo was defeated.

Now that Bepo is the last member of Law’s crew, he’s facing a lot more pressure to become stronger. While his Sulong ability is helpful, it won’t be enough. He might need to gain the powers of a Devil Fruit to truly protect Law and fulfill his duties.

Koala

  • Affiliation: Revolutionary Army

Koala is part of the Revolutionary Army, but her strength isn’t as impressive as some of her fellow members. Characters like Sabo and the other Revolutionary Army commanders are very powerful, and each of them possesses a Devil Fruit ability.

Koala currently depends solely on her Fish Man Karate skills. Although she’s very skilled in this fighting style, gaining a Devil Fruit power could significantly boost her abilities and make her a strong, independent asset to the Revolutionary Army, capable of facing any opponent.

Helmeppo

  • Affiliation: Marine Organization

Helmeppo first appeared early in the One Piece story, along with characters like Zoro and Koby. While many fans didn’t like him at first, he’s become much stronger and more developed over the series, especially thanks to his training with Garp.

Since the time skip, Helmeppo has gotten stronger, but he’s still not very powerful compared to others in the New World—even Koby is ahead of him. If Helmeppo wants to become a top Marine and Koby’s trusted aide, he’ll likely need the boost that a Devil Fruit could provide.

Koby

  • Affiliation: Marine Organization

Koby is being trained by the legendary Marine, Garp, and has been for over two years. Though he’s improved a lot since escaping slavery under Alvida, he’s still relatively weak, as demonstrated when he recently visited Amazon Lily. There, he was captured and nearly defeated with a single blow by Boa Hancock.

Koby shows promise with his Haki, but he’s currently quite weak. Considering he’s meant to follow in Garp’s footsteps and potentially challenge the Pirate King, his current abilities are far from sufficient. He poses no real threat to Luffy, and the only way he could become one is if he gained an incredibly powerful Devil Fruit.

Tashigi

  • Affiliation: Marine Organization

Tashigi was first introduced in Loguetown as Smoker’s assistant. However, many fans have noticed she’s surprisingly weak, especially considering her strong sense of justice is similar to Zoro’s. Even after two years of training, as shown during the events at Punk Hazard, she hasn’t become much stronger.

She’s still not strong enough, and with the final arc of the story already underway, she’s running out of time to improve. Eating a Devil Fruit would be a fast way for her to gain power and become more competitive with other skilled swordsmen.

Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga, One Piece, follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as they search for the legendary treasure, the One Piece. The story is currently in its final arc. A new chapter, 1172, will be released in this week’s Weekly Shonen Jump. It will be available on February 1, 2026, at 12 AM Japan Standard Time (11 AM Eastern Time, 8 AM Pacific Time). Fans can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app, which helps support the creator.
