Double Fine recently revealed Kiln, a new multiplayer party brawler, during the Xbox Developer Direct showcase. Surprisingly, this announcement came nearly a decade after the game was first created! Kiln originally started as a prototype during Double Fine’s ‘Amnesia Fortnight’ event – a yearly two-week game jam where the studio experiments with new ideas.
For years, the game was shrouded in mystery, with only a few early images surfacing online. But during the recent Xbox Developer Direct, Double Fine Productions finally unveiled the chaotic, physics-driven fighting game.
Kiln – Ten Years in the Making
If you search online for information about the game Kiln, you’ll likely come across a short description written by Double Fine in April 2017.
Kiln is an online multiplayer game where you team up with others to fight. Created by Derek Brand, it lets you build and control your own unique characters with wild, physics-based movements and destruction. In the game, you play as a powerful Mountain Spirit constantly battling at the top of a peak. You’ll craft warrior characters called Vessels using a virtual pottery wheel, then control them to fight and interact with the game world.
Characters are generated during gameplay with a wide range of unique shapes and sizes. Each character has its own special abilities and is controlled using a system that takes full advantage of procedural animation techniques.
Double Fine also announced in 2017 who had been key in developing the game’s initial stages.
So, I’ve been checking out Team Kiln for AF2017, and Derek Brand is leading the charge. Honestly, these guys have been obsessed with pottery textures all day – it’s all they’ve been looking at! It’s kinda funny, but you can tell they’re really dedicated to getting it right.

All of this was reshared by Double Fine during today’s announcement.
Today, during the Xbox Developer Direct, we saw how that game has evolved over the last decade.
The trailer began with Tim Schafer, the creative lead at Double Fine, demonstrating pottery – and that’s essentially the idea behind their new game, Kiln. Players mold clay characters into any form they want, then put them in chaotic environments where they can break and smash each other.
Create unique pottery-inspired characters and then battle with them online in fun, imaginative environments designed to spark your creativity.
