The morality system in the Fable reboot sets out to reflect our own world.
The new Fable game from Playground Games was the main focus of the Xbox Developer_Direct presentation on January 22, 2026. After the presentation, Ralph Fulton, who founded Playground Games, discussed the game’s development with Xbox Wire.
Morality Is a Sliding Scale in Fable
Fulton explains that when redesigning the game’s morality system, the team aimed to make it feel realistic by mirroring how people actually make moral decisions in real life.
Our approach to morality in this game is based on the idea that good and evil aren’t absolute. Instead, we see morality as subjective – it’s all about personal opinions and what individuals consider valuable in others when they form judgments.
As we showed during the Developer_Direct broadcast, our game doesn’t use a simple good-versus-evil system. Instead, your actions – specifically those witnessed by others in the world of Albion – determine your reputation. If people see you doing something, you’ll start to become known for it. We often use the example of kicking chickens, because it’s a classic and memorable part of the Fable series.
If people see you harming animals, like kicking a chicken, you’ll start to become known as someone who does that. The more people witness it, the stronger that reputation will become, and it will influence how others treat you in town.
The game Fable is scheduled to come out in the summer of 2026. It will be available on both Xbox and, for the first time, PlayStation 5.
I was really excited about the idea of having dog companions in the new game, but unfortunately, that feature won’t be included. Ralph Fulton explained his reasons for making that tough decision, and you can read all about it here if you’re curious!
